Just noticed that the Julie's Nails salon next to McKinnon's is completely empty, with no note on the door. They must have closed very suddenly -- as I was looking in the window, someone walked by and said "I just had an appointment there last week!"

Does anyone known what happened to Salon Mia Bella (also known as Salon D'Elegance) on Mass Ave at Dover Street? I've been getting my hair cut there every few months, but when I tried going there today, they appeared to be out of business.

So in light of the deeply distressing NYT piece "The Price of Nice Nails" about manicurists and wage theft, does anyone know of some places around here where we know for a fact the manicurists are treated at least with the legal minimum of tipped employee wages, OSHA regulations, etc?

Sigh.

As has been mentioned on this group before, my wife [livejournal.com profile] somerville_lmt and I are building a float center in Magoun Square. We have full construction plans and bids from contractors and a pending application for a building permit, and now have just launched pre-orders in the form of a crowdfund campaign.  Since so much of our expenses are in the form of construction and equipment purchase, every dollar we can get now helps immensely with cash flow.

Pre-order now at: float.tilt.com

More information at our website, www.floatboston.com.  As always, glad to answer any questions people may have.

Dreadlocks

Hey,

I'm looking to investigate getting my (white-person) hair backcombed and starting some dreads. My big question is: has anyone had the same thing done at a salon nearby? I'm thinking Judy Jetson would be the most likely place, but I've heard some icky things about that salon and am kind of torn about whether to try it. Would also take any advice about dreads in general... I'm harboring a hope that I can get them and still look professional (within the context of being a writer/Camberville resident) but am not totally sure whether some of the dreads I see that i like are real or extensions.

Thanks!

It's that time of the year again: The Pets In Need non-profit animal adoption program is hosting a silent auction this Friday, November 15th from 7:00 -- 9:00 p.m. at the Somerville City Club (20 Inner Belt Rd., across from the Holiday Inn and a short walk from Sullivan station) and all proceeds from the auction will go towards the care of the homeless animals. Pets In Need is a small no-kill adoption program run privately by volunteers who have joined together to save the unwanted and abandoned animals who have come across their path.

Items up for auction include valuable Boston sports collectibles from the Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots, stays at fashionable local hotels (The Liberty Hotel! XV Beacon!) passes to local museums, gift certificates to Somerville area restaurants (Sarma! Highland Kitchen)!) and much more -- there is something for everyone in the family! There is no admission fee, and all ages are welcome. Refreshments will be donated by a number of local eateries. A band will be playing your favorite hits from the 80s, try your luck at the 50/50 raffle, and enjoy the cash bar! All donations and adoption fees go directly to the animals. For more information on the event, including items up for auction, please visit: http://www.petsinneedanimalrescue.org.

I was wondering if anyone in Davis had checked out the new foot spa on Mass Ave in North Cambridge? it's next to Verna's where Animal Spirit used to be, and I think it opened a week or two ago? I'll do further research as well (yelp and all that), but was curious if anyone here had made it over...

I've decided that I really don't know what the hell I'm doing when it comes to my eyebrows, and I need help. Can anyone recommend somewhere cheap and close to Davis where they'll shape my eyebrows but also show me how to do it myself? Thank you!

Manicurist?

I start a new job on Tuesday. (Yay!) However, I was recently put on medication for arthritis, and it has the odd side effect of making my nails really soft and easily broken. My fingers look rather bad.

I'd like to get a manicure tomorrow, but I'm a tomboy and have never had one. Can anyone recommend a shop on the T for a newbie like me?
[identity profile] trtls.livejournal.com
I called to make a manicure reservation a few weeks ago and they didn't answer the phone or call me back. Their voicemail message made it sound like they were open. Since then I've taken notice that there is never anyone there when I walk past. Anyone know anything?

Pedicure?

I tried searching through the tags without much assistance, so here I am! (Relatedly: perhaps "hair" should be "hair/beauty"? Just a thought...)

I am looking for a place in Davis to get a decent pedicure. I have been to Square Nail Studio in the past and while I ADORE Heather and her hearty band of quirky beauty professionals, I'm looking for a more.... recession-friendly option (i.e., cheaper). I've checked out Yelp and other review websites, and have seen mixed reviews for Davis Square Nails and Julie's Nails (though I don't know if I've even seen a storefront for either place).

Does anyone have personal recommendations for a good, relatively inexpensive place to get a pedicure? I'm looking specifically for someplace close to the MBTA, either Davis or Porter.

Looking for a recommendation for a nail salon! I don't want extensions, fancy polish jobs, or anything but a presentable short-length manicure and polish, nor do I want a relentless upsell for the same

Hi all --

For many years my best friend and I have shared funny, embarrassing, and everything in between stories about waxing experiences, and after joking that we needed some sort of forum to share these stories, we decided that the best way to start a conversation about waxing would be through the blog that we've now launched: Grin and Bare It. We're hoping to get stories from all sorts of people about all different kinds of waxes, so if you have a story to share, we'd love to hear from you! Please e-mail us at grinandbareitblog at gmail dot com with any great stories. I'm also happy to meet you over coffee to share the story and I'll write it up for you! And it's up to you as to whether or not you'd like to remain anonymous.

Either way, please check it out at grinandbareitblog.wordpress.com and help us spread the word!

Happy Waxing!

Looking to get a perm soon, and I know that can be a bit tricky--any recommendations on who's good at inducing that supercurly natural-girl look?

Also, I'm finally fed up with the leg-waxing at Davis Square Nails & Spa; they're cheap and fast, but I always end up with leftover wax on my legs and not a whole lot less hair. Other recommendations? I don't really care about the Salon Experience--I just want smooth legs.

Waxing

In trying a find a waxer, I checked the memories and came across Priscilla at Skin & Body Works. Are they still open? I've been trying to call them all day, and all I get is a "full mailbox" notice.

Alternatively, any other recommendations for a good & preferrably cheap bikini/Brazilian waxer?

I'm preparing for a surprise night on the town and I'm looking for a "Beauty Salon/SPA" where I can take the GF to get a blow-out and get made up.

I thought it would be an easy thing to find - on the old continent all you have to do is get your significant other to a beauty salon where they'll primp her out in 30 minutes  and voila... you got yourself a presentable girlfriend.  From my search here it  seems that the beauty market is very segregated - you go to a hair salon to get your hair done, you go to nail salon to get your nails done, you go to a spa to get a facial or massage.

Any suggestions on where I can find a all inclusive beauty pit-stop?

I'm looking for recommendations for a place to get my nails done and my eyebrows done that is good and hygienic, but reasonably priced. This is in prep for a wedding next weekend, and I'll be bringing the bride with me, so it should be a reasonably niceish place that does a good job, but need not be a high end spa. Neither of us are regulars at this sort of thing as well, so English speaking would be preferable.

I do have a car so some distance is ok.
