There has been discussion in my home as I'm sure in many of yours over how long it will take this year for all the snow to finally melt away. I've heard guesses for as early as April and as late as June, but might it be even later? Or earlier? Here is the official DSLJ contest! I will judge (and am therefore ineligible) based on when all the snow is gone from my yard, or some similar arbitrary yet definite metric, and announce the winner(s) in however many months.

You have until ~5pm Friday to place your bets. You can change your answer as many times as you like until the poll is closed.

We need an agreed upon metric. Like the pile of snow in front of Target or something!

Why bother? if there's no money riding on it, leave it ambiguous. That way when it comes down to it we can have the additional fun of argueing over who won!

what if all the snow melts on March 3, but then there's another storm the following day? :)

I'm guessing we'll see ground before we see the last storm. A couple rainy days of 60 would destroy whatever we currently have in short order.

I'm working on it! (Well, I'm buying my first car in almost a decase so at least I'll be contributing to global warming? Baby steps)

OK, I vote it's the first day you can see more than half the ground on some patch of front or back yard. Some place safe from snow-melting dog/fratboy pee.

Rainy 60F days next week would mean flooding of biblical proportions.

I guessed April 14th for snow to be gone from yards. giant snow piles in huge parking lots (gateway center, I'm looking at you) will take somewhat longer. I predict boring-alleged-news filler stories about the snow pile that won't die around the "major melting finished + 1 week" mark.

If we keep getting mid-week storms every week for the next month and a half, however, it might take another eruption of Great Blue Hill to melt it all. (It's been 31 years since the last eruption (http://www.oddee.com/item_97022.aspx))

Oooh, I realize the answers are supposed to be hidden, but if you shared yours I'll share mine: the same! ha.

But I'll admit, I just picked my birthday. I had no thought process to base that on, just wanted to join in. double ha.

wow. it looks like i was totally off. no more snow plus a bunch of pleasant warm weather has slain all but the biggest snow piles.

now, it's time to play FIND THE POTHOLES!

Once temps hit the 40s in March, the snow will melt alarmingly fast. The difference in time between melting 6 inches of snow and 20 inches of snow when the warm sunny march days come is actually not all that different.

I've seen 4 ft snowbanks in Tahoe and Vermont melt down to inches after 2 weeks of warm weather.

I'm with you, and my 8-ball says much warmer than 40s are due then.

I think it will be gone at ten past 9 in the morning on March the 23rd.

I picked May 1, which I've stated publicly and often so it's not a secret, but I've been picking it entirely because outdoor fucking starts that day.

Then you should average all of the answers and see how close it gets to the actual date...
