It appears that Somerville finally has their new system up for sending street sweeping/trash alerts by email, phone, text etc. I set mine up by going to http://www.somervillema.gov/trash finding my address under "My Schedule" and then choosing "Sign up for reminders". So far I have been getting emails with trash pickup, and the system knows things like to send a delayed message on weeks when there is a holiday. You also have control over what time the messages are sent. Supposedly this will also be sending reminders about street sweeping, though I can't vouch for that in February.

From the main Somerville page under "Residents" I see that there is a pull-down menu option for "Sign Up for Alerts", but as that's not the way I signed up for mine, I can't say whether you end up at the same place.

Does anyone have any info on the duration of the roadwork in and around Davis? When combined with the roadwork around Porter Sq., the traffic has been a hairball of mythic proportions this week, and getting from Winter Hill to North Cambridge an exercise in frustration.

Relatedly, is there any way to get better coordination between Somerville road maintenance and Cambridge road maintenance?

In previous years, there have been days for hazardous waste disposal in June and September at the DPW. This year, I can't find any mention of them, on the city website or the ResiStat mailings. What are we to do with our hazardous waste?

Press release from the city: http://www.somervillema.gov/news/new-somerville-data-farm-gives-real-time-look-city-operations

SOMERVILLE - Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone is excited to announce a new home for the City's data sets, which gives Somerville residents easy access to the same data he uses to make decisions. Now you can take a trip to the Data Farm to follow data trends in the City and use the data for your own analysis.

Somerville's Data Farm (www.somervillema.gov/datafarm) is home to "locally sourced and handpicked food for thought," which includes three portals of data visualizations as well as a fourth portal with the "data seeds" (the raw data) used to "grow" the other portals: [portals over there]

I have always appreciated the data that this city uses to make decisions about where to aim resources. I think it's very shrewd.

They went all out with puns: "Locally sourced & handpicked food for thought", "Artisanal" data, and more.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/2015/08/27/two-harvard-grads-want-change-the-way-help-the-homeless/7sUBFGwo1BNYOS7gpjjJ6M/story.html?p1=feature_stack_7_hp

It's in Harvard Square, and is specifically for young folks, and is run by Harvard students, apparently. It looks to be far more supportive and respectful than the other shelters in the area (of which I am unfortunately familiar). The bunk beds look really cool!

I had heard that the previous shelter run by students at Harvard was much better than the rest (but was really hard to get into). So this one will likely be good as well. Now we just need a bunch more of these to serve all the homeless and semi-homeless, rather than having to kick some people out on the streets even when they really want to be in the shelters...

I recall that there was some heated discussion about a posting. The OP had seen a bus whose front sign was flashing "Call MBTA Police at xxx-xxxx." Unfortunately, the OP couldn't remember the number and so called the Somerville police at their business number. The person answering the phone said to hang up and dial 911, and the OP found this to be rude or something, eventually leading to LJ drama.

The background that probably isn't known to ordinary people but is well-known to police and other emergency-response folks is that 911 does not simply route you to the local police department. There's a whole specialized infrastructure behind 911. (I know this because I worked in VoIP for years and had contact with the "emergency dispatch" community/industry.) Your call doesn't go to the local police department, but rather a specialized dispatcher who is trained to know how to route your particular problem to the emergency service that can deal with it -- fire, police, ambulance, etc.

The 911 system tells the dispatcher where you are -- there's a complete database of the physical locations of all landlines and the cellphone system uses various tricks to locate you within 100 meters (IIRC). So the 911 dispatcher knows where you are -- even if you don't.

Calls to the 911 system are prioritized. In the old days, special wires were reserved for 911 calls, and even if the ordinary lines were overloaded, 911 calls would get through. These days the systems may be more sophisticated, but it's still set up that ordinary calls can't block 911 calls.

The point being, if the problem needs to be dealt with now, call 911 to maximize the chances of a "successful outcome". Other numbers don't work nearly as well.

Looking for advice... I put in a request to 311 over two months ago to have a City tree in front of my house trimmed. I've followed up 3 times to 311 and once to an individual DPW employee. The only responses I've gotten are that my request has been sent to DPW.

Has anyone ever had a situation like this and dealt with it successfully? It's apparently not allowed to have a private company come trim the tree, so I'm a bit stuck. 311 has generally been helpful, but in this case I'm getting pretty frustrated.

Thanks!

Anyone already have an answer to what to do if you already had 64 gallon rolling containers that you bought and paid for before the City decided to give them out? They were expensive, there's nothing wrong with them, and I can't store 1-2 more containers on the property if the City drops off a couple more this week. Is there any way to actually decline the new ones?

I have not called 311 because I've been out of town, but I suppose possibly I should.

Cambridge is doing a pilot of curbside compost pickup next year in a limited geographical area that runs from Alewife to Porter south of Mass Ave. They're looking for up to 800 households to sign up by December 20. See the link above for more details, including the exact map of eligible streets, and to sign up.

Hey neighbors: the city's free flu vax clinic details have been posted. http://www.somervillema.gov/alerts/city-flu-clinics-2013

I got mine last night at the Annex, it was not too busy but I was glad to see other folks there. A lot of people rely on the community to keep the viruses at bay because they can't get vaccinated. Here's a recent plea from a cancer patient: https://twitter.com/AdamsLisa/status/385118935223242752 . Help keep them healthy too.

Ave.
Meet-and-Greet with refreshments from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

SOMERVILLE – Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone invites residents to the Spring 2013
ResiStat Community Meetings, a twice-yearly effort to share the latest City news
and data directly with residents and gather their feedback.

Seven neighborhood meetings, one in each ward, will be held in the coming weeks.
Mayor Curtatone, ward and at-large aldermen, members of the Somerville
Police Department, and City staff will discuss issues important to residents and
take their questions. Topics will range from crime and safety reports, rodent
control, and neighborhood improvements such as road, park, and library projects
to a look at citywide initiatives including Green Line station area planning,
the city budgeting process, and a word from the Mayor on how the City is using
data and a systems approach to improve services and tackle new issues.
Refreshments will be served at a meet-and-greet before each meeting, where
residents can talk with City officials and their neighbors.

Residents are invited to help shape the meeting agendas by taking the Meeting

There is an elderly gentleman often walking around Davis pulling a two wheeled cart whom I assume is homeless. I don't know his situation as I've never approached him for fear of violating his privacy. However I'm now worried about his safety during the storm.

What shelter options exist for the homeless in the Davis area? Does anyone know if this gentleman sleeps out or not? If he does and there are local options I'd like to get him some assistance if I see him today.

According to Twitter and Facebook, the West Branch of the library is closed indefinitely "due to electrical and plumbing issues." Anyone know what's up with that? Didn't they just recently renovate it, at least in part?

Howdy!

I'm hoping to find a couple of spots here in Davis that could handle 15-20 people for weekly meetups and whatnot, hopefully with a projector for speakers, etc. Any suggestions?

From the city's web page:

SOMERVILLE - The City of Somerville announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Somerville Municipal Employees Association (SMEA) that clears the way for the City's East and West Branch Libraries to open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The SMEA has already ratified the change and the new hours will go into effect on November 10, 2012. This will mark the first time since the 1970s that the Somerville Public Libraries East and West Branch Libraries have opened their doors on weekends.

Friends of the SPL
Friends of the SPL

Hello folks: I'm not a member of the Friends of the Somerville Public Library, but I do love the library. And as a kid the library was a really important place for me.

They are competing for some learn and play kits, and have tweeted a couple of times looking for votes for their entry. I wouldn't ask if it required registration (I hate that too). You only have to select them from the pulldown menus and do a captcha for this one.

For the kids of Somerville, if you can spare a minute, go vote for them. The current totals look pretty reasonable, so a little bit of support might go a long way here. I also noted that it was possible to vote from my phone....

Here's their tweet request--also consider following them if you are on twitter: https://twitter.com/Friends_SPL/status/239090235848392704

Note: I looked for guidelines on whether these kinds of "vote for..." posts were allowed but couldn't find objections. If it's not acceptable please feel free to moderate away.
