The city is planning significant changes to the traffic/pedestrian lights in Davis Square, on Wednesday June 27. Instead of having all the walk lights on at the same time, they're going to be coordinated with red and green lights for vehicles, in part by giving pedestrians a walk light at times when everyone is crossing anyway because we can see it's safe.

The city says (hopes) that this will make it significantly faster to cross Davis on foot, especially diagonally. It's supposed to give pedestrians more walk lights and give traffic on both Highland Avenue and Holland Street more green light time per hour, and add more green lights for buses leaving the Davis Square busway. (For more and possibly clearer information, see the info and background pages on the city website.)

I was alerted to this by some not-very-large posters taped to some of the light poles in Davis Square, a couple of days ago. I haven't gotten an email from the city, which I would have expected. Also, Ron, I can't find a better tag for this than "local government," since we don't have one for walking, traffic, or pedestrian.

According to [livejournal.com profile] lancedavisward6, Garden Remedies will host a second public meeting on Wednesday Feb. 8th at 6:30 at Community Baptist Church to discuss the revised plans that they submitted to the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Garden Remedies is proposing to convert part of 245 Elm Street, the former Family Dollar, into a medical marijuana dispensary, while subleasing the remainder of the space to another unspecified tenant. More info in this earlier DSLJ post.

(I'm adding a "marijuana" tag to DSLJ, as I expect this to become a popular discussion topic.)

On our increasingly hip Winter Hill, the newest biz to open is Tipping Cow.

I tried the "sweet corn" tonight--I never had corn ice cream before. It's super creamy, and delightfully corny. I assume because of the corn that it means it's a serving of vegetables, right?

[due to our increasing hipness, we may need a Winter Hill tag now.]

I'm over there twice a week for bootcamp, and on Saturdays for free yoga, and I only accidentally found out about this farmers' market yesterday.

http://www.assembly.market/

I'm not going to check it out today because there's a giant walk-a-thon thing going on that looked like it was going to be too crowded for my tastes. But I'll be going to future ones to check it out.

Also: can I have an Assembly tag?

If you're going to the Pride 2013 Festival tomorrow (June 8) at City Hall Plaza in Boston, please visit the table shared by Theatre@First and The Post-Meridian Radio Players! We'll be representing part of Davis Square's live theatre scene. Find out about upcoming auditions (pretty much all rehearsals and performances take place in Davis), learn how to get involved as an actor, artist, designer, techie or crewbie, and grab some free swag while it lasts.

Pride is a rain or shine event, and rain is expected, but hoping to see you there anyway!

(Mods, I'm making an LGBT tag.)

[Ron, how about a "music" tag?]
[personal profile] ron_newman
I'm highly amused by everyone's recent use of this tag, but it will eventually get in the way of the tag's original purpose. So, by the end of today, I'm going to exercise my community-maintainer prerogative and remove this tag from all posts that were made during the past two weeks.

(Because of a quirk in the options that LJ gives community maintainers for managing tags, you will not be able to remove the tag yourself, even if you originally put it there.)

Someone else has created a more generally appropriate, though less humorous, tag for these posts. Please use it in the future. Thanks.

I am interested in learning to run as part of a group in the Cambridge/Somerville area. I have been searching for months for some sort of community group or paid program that offers a way for non-runners to get into the act through a couch to 5k type program. A friend living in Upstate NY joined a program through Fleet Feet Sports that had scheduled group runs along with runner support - experienced runners or trainers coaching her along - and working toward a community 5k.

I know there are many downloadable audio programs but I need the support of running buddies in person.

It seems to me that all the resources for runners in Boston are for people that already run. Any suggestions?

According to Twitter and Facebook, the West Branch of the library is closed indefinitely "due to electrical and plumbing issues." Anyone know what's up with that? Didn't they just recently renovate it, at least in part?

I just now saw a large bird of prey (Hawk? Falcon?) on the railing of my balcony on Bay State Avenue up in Ball Square. (I hate that I never think to take pictures of anything until it's too late.) It was a foot tall at least, and very beautiful. If you're in the immediate area and you have a very tiny dog or kittens, I'd say bring 'em inside for now. It looked hungry.

Let's see if I can make a new tag...

We live in a 2-family house with one mail basket hanging on the wall. For at least a decade, mail to both units just gets placed in that basket and we each take what's ours when we get home.

Lately I've been noticing that on occasion our mail carrier sees fit to deliver the mail to the two separate units by placing the envelopes on the floor by the door. It's a minor annoyance when it happens, but also has me concerned about mail getting lost or kicked away to where it might blow away. Should they be allowed to leave our mail on the floor? And are we also breaking the rules by not having an industry-standard mail box for each unit?

.... anyone know of any local charities needing volunteers this holiday season?  Looking to do something in Somerville, local, etc.

Thanks for any ideas you might have!

Hello, Ladies and Gents of the DSLJ

I note the airplane noise discussion got ginned up again over the weekend (understandably so, since noise levels were noticeably higher than usual).

I’m going to try once more, as briefly as I can, to provide some crucial historical background, since DSLJ debate on this topic usually resolves so quickly into a match among the “this-is-a-fact-of-life-in-an-urban-environment-and-we-all-need-the-airport” forces, the “my-quality-of-life-my-sanity-my-ability-to-work-are-all-being-destroyed-by-constant-jet-noise” forces and – perhaps most numerous – the “why-discuss-it-when-nothing-ever-happens?” forces.  I am not trying to prolong the discussion, and everyone is entitled to her/his opinion, but it's really important to know the history.

If you lived in Somerville before 2007, your ears do not deceive you: there’s been a sharp increase in jet noise.   The FAA and Massport COULD bring the noise back to past levels with very little change in airfield throughput or on-time performance.  They WON’T, because appealing the most recent court ruling just isn’t cost-effective, so Somerville is unable to carry on the fight.  Policy at the FAA is still largely in the hands of Bush-area appointees, and even Obama appointees don’t like setting precedents that might constrain the authority of the FAA to do whatever it deems necessary to manage air traffic.

So it is what it is.

More after the cut... )

Tufts University will shoot off fireworks tomorrow night at 9:15 for the annual Tuftonia's Day (and the 150th anniversary of Tufts' founding). This will happen at the Rez Quad west of Packard Avenue.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bex77 for the reminder.

To update the prior discussion on the subject, according to their web site, Vej Naturals will be moving to the currently-Joey's-Thai (and formerly a number of other places) at 195 Elm St. No opening date is set yet, but we can hope it's soon!

You can also follow them on Facebook.

Once they are open, I will call for a meet-up or two to check out the new digs because I already know the people and food are awesome.

[So what should the difference be between the "dining" and "restaurants" tags here?]

I just got an email saying that Chinook is closing as of today. No word on how/why/etc.

Edited: The email looked a lot like their earlier newsletter emails. It read only:
Chinook is Closing.
After 10 wonderful years Chinook is closing. Our last day wil be Tuesday July 14th. We've greatly appreciated your business and value all of the relationships that have evolved from being part of the Davis Square community.
Our warmest thanks,
The Chinook Team.

A couple weeks ago, I had a really strange reaction to a dosage change in an antidepressant, and I'm still suffering the effects of it. My doctor doesn't know why this happened or how to fix it. I don't know if this is something that a good doctor *should* know how to deal with or if I really am in a peculiar situation and my doctor's doing the right thing.

I'd like to find a psychiatrist/psychopharmacologist that will just listen to this particular situation and give a second opinion. I don't want to change doctors unless it turns out that another doctor is better equipped to deal with this situation, so, understandably, I'd rather avoid the intake process with another physician. I don't know if this conflicts with medical ethics or not, but I figured it was worth a try. Does anybody have ideas on how I can run what's happening by another pdoc? Even if somebody here happens to be one or be friends with one, that would be a huge help and for legal purposes, I would realize it's not actually medical advice.

Thanks for any ideas.

(btw--any chance of a mental health tag getting added?)

While we're on the subject of Ball Square businesses, a few updates I thought might interest DSLJ folks:

1) DSLJ favorite rec Paramount Bicycle Repair has moved to Ball Square (from Powderhouse). The new location is in the small strip of stores extending up Bristol Rd (also includes Stinky's, a dry cleaner, a cleaning service, maybe something else?) and seems nice.
Tyler says "spread the word!" about the move, and I'm sure he'd be glad to have people stop by and say hi.

2) The former Urban Gourmet space has signs up advertising help wanted for what will presumably be the new restaurant opening there.
The signs refer to "Eat at Jumbo's: pizza, wings, and grill"
I guess it's meant to be associated with Tufts in some way . . .
(In case anyone is interested in the jobs and you can't read it in the image, it says to email info@eatatjumbos.com or call 617-571-3611.)
pic of sign= )

Personally, I'm a little disappointed, as this really doesn't seem all that different than stuff we already have (On Broadway/Soundbites Grill specifically), I had hoped for a little more variety.  I am glad to see something going in there though, after so long with an empty storefront, and I shall hope for the best! (with vegetarian options, plz ;)

3) Speaking of empty storefronts, the space on Broadway next to White Hen, most recently a real estate office (I think once a CVS?) which has been empty for a little while is displaying building permits indicating it is being converted to a dance studio. I know nothing else, just what it says on the permit, but I'm excited to see the space filled and this seems like it could be a neat addition to the neighborhood.
ETA: a large banner now says "The New Home of Mary Flynn Murphy Dance Studio" and says it will open March 2nd.

4) The Pub (formerly Powderhouse Pub, i.e. the one next to Kelly's. Really, it's just called "The Pub" now.) is now hosting Stump Trivia on Wednesday nights. This is in addition to Soundbites hosting Stump on Mondays (which I assume they are still doing, though I haven't checked, as they are listed on the Stump site).

(hmm, no "Ball Square" tag? would it make sense to have one?)
