Just before Christmas I posted about how I came home only to find several SPD vehicles, along with numerous officers, 2 handcuffed (apparent) perps, and a couple of piles of packages in front of my apartment; come to find out that the police had just broken up/arrested part of a package-stealing ring which had been wrecking havoc all around West Somerville.  Ron had already told me that this had ended up on Universal Hub, but little did I know that I was going to end up getting a shout-out in the pages of Scout Somerville as well for that very DSLJ post! (It's on Page 8 under "Winners and Losers," FWIW.)  Whatever shall I do with my newfound fame?... ;-)

(BTW, I know several readers mentioned either having missing packages of their own or knowing people who hadn't received packages yet--did everyone end up getting their mail eventually?)

...right in front of my apartment at the dead end of Highland Road.

I had no idea why there were at least three police SUVs parked there w/their blue lights on as I came walking down from Highland Ave., until I saw the two guys in handcuffs and the rather large piles of packages, mostly from Amazon, piled up on the sidewalk in front of my place; after the (apparent) perps were hauled away, I asked the remaining cops if that was what was up, and they confirmed it.  So, if you were expecting a package and it hasn't shown up yet, perhaps a trip to the Somerville PD may be in order?...

I just want to give a heads up to people in the Willow Ave / Morrison Ave area that my building (a 3-family) has had 3 packages apparently stolen from our front porch over the last couple weeks. All the packages were delivered in the middle of day on weekdays while we all were at work.  Has anyone else in the neighborhood had any problems like this recently? I'm very sad to have to do signature-required delivery from now on.

There will be a public meeting concerning the proposed sale of the Somerville Main Post Office and the fate of the interior 1937 mural, 'A Skirmish Between British and Colonists Near Somerville in Revolutionary Times' by artist Ross Moffett hosted by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission on Thursday March 6 at 7pm at City Hall. All fellow Somervillians who want to see this public treasure preserved, rather than sold off to the highest bidder, should attend this meeting.

Across America, the US Postal Service is liquidating historic post offices in the name of budget cuts. Many of these buildings contain significant New Deal era public artworks, like in Somerville. USPS has identified our main post office in Union Square as the only such post office in Massachusetts to be auctioned off. (Why us?) While the buildings are often repurposed, the beautiful artworks inside often get removed from public display and effectively become restaurant or office decorations for the new owners, available for viewing by appointment only.

If you have any concerns about the privatization of Somerville's historic post office or the preservation of the irreplaceable Moffett mural, it is important that your voice be heard now. Very important. The fate of Somerville's most cherished historical public art piece could be determined in the coming weeks. Please take the opportunity to join your neighbors and attend this meeting on Thursday to discuss the steps being taken to preserve Somerville's magnificent New Deal art legacy for generations to come.

Public Meeting: Potential Adverse Effects of USPS Proposed Sale
Somerville Main Post Office (National Register of Historic Places
Hosted by Somerville Historic Preservation Commission
3rd Floor Conference Room, Somerville City Hall
93 Highland Ave. Somerville
Thursday March 6, 7pm

If you can't join the discussion at City Hall, comments can also be forwarded to the Historical Commission at historic@somervillema.gov

According to the Somerville Times, a Malden postal worker was found to have thousands of pieces of mail in his apartment belonging to people from Somerville, Medford, Malden, and Melrose. USPS will be delivering the unopened mail, but much of it was opened so they don't know who the intended recipients were. If you think your mail is missing, you should contact the USPS at their contact info bolded in the article below.

I've found that the UPS delivery driver is dropping packages without a knock or a doorbell ring recently; quite the contrary to the past behavior of requiring a signature when one wasn't actually required. Maybe it's a new guy? I live close to the Cutter/Highland intersection.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have contacted UPS customer service and they got back to me promptly with an apology for the driver releasing the package without any notification and asked for the package tracking number so they could look into it.

Track your online purchases carefully, everyone! :)

The latest Planning Board agenda includes a proposal by the US Postal Service to convert what is now the Parisian Style wig shop, 18 Bow Street, to a new post office. Here are the submitted plans and the report by the city planning staff.

I don't think the plans will affect or displace the adjoining Dance Union, Cafe Tango, and Union Square Donuts, but I can't tell for sure.

The plans don't show any parking or loading areas at all, so I have no idea how the Post Office is going to run its fleet of delivery trucks out of this little storefront ETA: Looks like that's all moving to Chelsea?. Compared to the current Post Office building overlooking the end of Prospect Street, this place is tiny.

I really don't want to start a flame war - this is an honest question for people living in the area between Davis and Ball Square.

When I was younger I lived in JP. I loved it. However, it was a town where you didn't bother to put out a pumpkin in October because it would be smashed by morning, and you tried very hard to be home for deliveries because boxes would be stolen from the porch.

I've spent the past decade in West Roxbury, where you could have anything at all on your porch and yard and it would not be disturbed.

Now, in the process of moving in, I've been tossing empty boxes on the front porch. Some are broken down, but others are not obviously empty (full of packing material). The idea is to eventually post to Craigslist that there are empty boxes at *address*, and they go away. However, I have not posted that yet, because I have recently placed a number of mail orders, and I don't want my items to be taken by "accident" with the empties should they arrive. The problem is that I just got home, and someone has helped themselves to my empties anyway. On the face of it, that's fine - I wanted to be rid of them.

What I am wondering is, is this the sort of neighborhood where I ought to be trying to have my deliveries taken around to the rear for safety? Do people generally help themselves to things on porches? Some of my neighbors have quite elaborate sitting areas on porches and I figured there was no problem with respect of that space.

I'm "fine" with living in either sort of neighborhood, but I'd rather not find out the hard way which this is.

Here is an admittedly odd question but I can't seem to find the answer. What time of the day do you usually get your mail delivered to your place?

I've been away for about 3 weeks and today I'm having my mail delivered at once for the time I was away. Since the mail won't fit in my apartment box, I'm going to have to wait for the mailman and get it from him in person. I'd rather not wait outside longer than I need to since its cold and I don't really want to be standing around all day.

Since I'm usually not home during the day I have no clue when the mailman normally arrives.

I thought maybe the USPS would have a service where you could put in your address or zip code and they would give you an estimate for the time of day when mail is delivered in that area. I couldn't find it but maybe its there somewhere?

If it helps any, I'm on Summer St around the Central Street intersection.

Theft of packages from doorsteps has been a continuing theme here on [livejournal.com profile] davis_square. I'm happy to see some police response:

To the individual who stole from my amazon box which was delivered to my front steps while I was at work:

You obviously do not believe in Karma if you are willing to commit such a petty, yet invasive crime.  You opened MY amazon package on MY front steps, removed the contents, and left the violated package behind.  It it quite obvious that the package had a similar size & shape as a laptop.  I bet you were quite surprised when you pulled out a used Neurology book.

I hope they lobotomize you.

I need some USPS Priority Mail flat rate padded envelopes. I recently discovered that, unlike the boxes and document envelopes, these are not available at local post offices. I have a pack of 15 on the way, but I'd like to be able to send a few things sooner than their estimated delivery date.

Do you already have a pack you can spare for a week or so? I can replace it as soon as the ones I ordered arrive. Thanks!

This morning the Lasership guy dropped off a parcel on Simpson Ave (where I live) and placed it between the swinging outer door and the security door without ringing the doorbell. I didn't get to see the Lasership courier by the time I got to the door.

I picked it up 15-30 seconds later and went back inside (I live on the ground level), then 5-10 seconds later I hear someone walk up the steps, open the swinging door, and that's when I saw approximately a 5'6" asian (possibly Korean, I'm Korean, and my gut feeling was that he was Korean in his late 30's to early 40's), but it could have been a mexican guy. He was wearing a ballcap (possibly blue color).

He walked back down the steps to his mini-van (beige color? Non-new or very old model with license plate 311LV or something like that) and drove away before I could get my camera. It seems like he's following  parcel trucks and stealing parcels on quiet neighborhoods.

I reported it to the Somerville PD, just thought the community should know.

P.S. Recent comments suggest the same person could have been the courier.
P.P.S. It probably was the courier.
P.P.P.S. My UPS package that arrived is now missing.
P.P.P.P.S. A neighbor delivered my missing UPS package (delivered to wrong house, I guess).

We have a couple hundred USPS priority boxes here in our office that we won't use. They're box #O-1095, specs are here. They come in boxes of 25 and we have at least 8 boxes to spare, maybe more if you need them.

These are free from the USPS, but they do seem to take forever to arrive so maybe it would be helpful for someone who wants them right away. That's actually how we ended up with so many: Ordered them for a big mailing, and they took so long to show up that we ended up buying some elsewhere to get the first batch out. Bah humbug.

Available for pick-up only (because I don't have a car myself!) near Porter Square. Our office hours are weekdays 10am-6pm, so that would be ideal, or I can see about being here at another time if necessary.

Wainwright sold them at cost (44 cents each), but Eastern is charging $8.80 for a sheet of 18, which is a 5-cent markup per stamp.

So this may be one of the weirder posts...but I want to get my nephew a singing telegram for his birthday -- most likely Spiderman or something like that. They live in Cambridgeport, which is not too far from our lovely Davis. Has anyone at all ever used any of these singing telegram companies in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville etc. area? Any recommendations? I don't want to end up with some horrible Shakes the Clown telegram.

Thanks!

It's a little known fact that this is Somerville's first year holding this contest. It's an even littler known fact as to what the winners receive. But it's kind of interesting nonetheless...

We live in a 2-family house with one mail basket hanging on the wall. For at least a decade, mail to both units just gets placed in that basket and we each take what's ours when we get home.

Lately I've been noticing that on occasion our mail carrier sees fit to deliver the mail to the two separate units by placing the envelopes on the floor by the door. It's a minor annoyance when it happens, but also has me concerned about mail getting lost or kicked away to where it might blow away. Should they be allowed to leave our mail on the floor? And are we also breaking the rules by not having an industry-standard mail box for each unit?

Long time reader, first time commenter.

I was wondering if anyone else has had any packages stolen off of their porches recently.  On Monday, I had 2 packages delivered (by UPS and DHL) around 1pm and by the time I got home at 5:30p, both were gone.  It seems that they were left right out in the open (I live on a busy cut-through street right outside of Davis, heading towards Powder House Square) so anything on the porch is visible.  Has anyone had any luck in getting UPS to deliver to the back?  I know people have mentioned before that they have locked boxes on the porch, but sometimes I get larger boxes so not sure this is an option.  UPS used to come at 5pm and he would hide the packages if we were not home so this hasn't been a problem as much in the past.

Has anyone else had problems with UPS delivery?

We're in Winter Hill, and for the last few weeks UPS has been refusing to deliver *any* package without a signature in person. Given that my boyfriend and I both have full time jobs, and can't sit around all day waiting for packages to arrive, this means that some packages have been returned to the sellers.

We've tried calling UPS and giving explicit instructions to leave packages at the back, private door to our apartment; leaving notes (the most recent UPS slip was left on TOP of our note saying to leave the package at the back door); calling shippers and having them designate the package as no signature necessary.

The driver is leaving slips in which he crosses out the area on the back where we can sign, and where it says "the sender required a signature at the time of delivery" he's crossed out "the sender" and written "UPS." He's also underlined "at the time of delivery," and scribbled over the spot where we can check where to leave the package.

I've just called UPS AGAIN and in theory the Somerville distribution center will be calling me back at some point today. With our schedules it is extremely difficult to drive to the out-of-the-way distribution center and pick the packages up directly, but I'm going to reschedule some things and try to go in person tonight to explain to them in small words that they are in the business of delivering packages.

Does anyone else have any ideas? suggestions? similar problems?

(For the record FedEx delivers quite happily to the back door with a 100% success rate so far.)
