Here is an admittedly odd question but I can't seem to find the answer. What time of the day do you usually get your mail delivered to your place?

I've been away for about 3 weeks and today I'm having my mail delivered at once for the time I was away. Since the mail won't fit in my apartment box, I'm going to have to wait for the mailman and get it from him in person. I'd rather not wait outside longer than I need to since its cold and I don't really want to be standing around all day.

Since I'm usually not home during the day I have no clue when the mailman normally arrives.

I thought maybe the USPS would have a service where you could put in your address or zip code and they would give you an estimate for the time of day when mail is delivered in that area. I couldn't find it but maybe its there somewhere?

If it helps any, I'm on Summer St around the Central Street intersection.

For me, both my current place and when I lived in Harvard Sq, the time varied considerably. I do remember a time when I would get mail at 10am every day almost on the dot, but not the USPS seems less reliable and consistent.

You might want to ask actual neighbors though for an estimate, or can you put up a sign on your mailbox to have the postal carrier ring you bell when he/she arrives?

Your best bet is to ask your literal neighbors. They may know if there is a pattern or schedule.

In general, the region to which a mail person delivers is fixed, but there isn't a fixed schedule. The amount of mail in any given day can vary vastly, as can their delivery speed. Add in a temporary worker covering for a sick mail person, and who the hell knows. Over the last 5 years, I've had my mail delivered as early as 11am, and as late as 6pm. On the other hand, at my childhood home, mail delivery was between 12:15pm and 12:45pm every week day for 8 years.

You can also arrange to pick up delayed mail at the post office, rather than have it delivered. That may be a better bet.

(Schedule based on zip code... ? There are 1200 zip codes in MA. That's around 2000 families per zip code, not to mention business addresses. Even if a postal worker could deliver to 2 addresses per minute, that's still a limit of around 750 a day, assuming 6 solid hours of deliveries and no down time.

More realistically, (going by the job postings on uk and US postal service websites), a postal worker would cover 3-6 miles a day. Somerville has ~8000 addresses per square mile, which is equivalent to a linear distribution of 90 houses per linear mile. at 6 miles per day, that's still only 550 houses per worker. It isn't like there is a swarm of postal workers that go zip code by zip code, delivering to the entire area in a 2 hour window.)

Pickup will be in Union, just so you're aware.

We were gone 2 weeks and had our mail held; our carrier offered to bring it to us, had it wrapped up in rubber bands, put it on our porch.

If you're getting a lot of mail (as it sounds like you are), I'm not sure if your regular carrier will bring it. I'm not talking from experience here - I've never been able to get them to deliver the accumulated mail, though I always check that box on the hold form. They ignore it and I have to go to Union Square and stand in line to get it. :-( But I know they do direct-to-door mail truck service for packages that are too big for your carrier's bag, and I don't know if your 3 weeks worth of mail will come that way - which means no predictable schedule at all!

As for the time of day of regular delivery, I'm nearer the other end of Central and a completely different mail route, but I second Clever's observation that it varies considerably. I usually get it in the late afternoon, but among other things it depends on whether I have my regular guy or a sub.

It might be better use of your time to request they hold it at the Post Office for you to pick up. At least you won't have to wait in the cold.

Usually around 11:30-12:30, sometimes around 5, never on Tuesdays. In Union Square by Target.

You might be able to call the post office when they first open in the morning, and have them ask your mail carrier while he's in the office sorting mail.

Matt since we live close to each other and I am around during the day, most of the time, I usually feel my mail comes between 12-3. I know that is a big window but I can never tell but I know today it was in my box today when I got home at 1.

I do believe if you have alot coming or are expecting some important stuff you can request for them to leave at the local office/facility. I know ours is the Union Square building as that is where I have picked up packages before. I admit deliveries are a hassle in this neighborhood.

I'm on Summer just down the street from you (between Central and School). Mine gets delivered around 4:00.

My understanding is that in cases like this you need to go to the Post Office and pick up the backlog. You should call them and ask.
