I've found that the UPS delivery driver is dropping packages without a knock or a doorbell ring recently; quite the contrary to the past behavior of requiring a signature when one wasn't actually required. Maybe it's a new guy? I live close to the Cutter/Highland intersection.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have contacted UPS customer service and they got back to me promptly with an apology for the driver releasing the package without any notification and asked for the package tracking number so they could look into it.

Track your online purchases carefully, everyone! :)

Yes, I have experienced this and have started to put, "ring bell when delivering" in the business or Address 2 section when I fill out any shipping form online.

is there a way to tell them to call a cellphone number instead of, or in addition to, knocking and ringing a doorbell?

I'm not sure the delivery people could make their required number of stops if they had to call someone at each and every one...

If it doesn't require a signature, I think it's pretty normal for them to just leave it at the door. We do pretty much all our shopping online so get 3-4++ deliveries per week--it's pretty rare for anyone to ring the bell (it happens, I think fedex does this the most consistently).

I know the post office tries to use judgement base partly on the carrier's memory of the customers desire. Of course the PO visits each house every day; and it's usually the same person 5 out of 6 days, and the 6-day substitute is also a regular for that route. They don't have any database to record this information and make it available to the carrier - quite important when there is a non-regular substitute. If there is a spot on the porch that isn't visible they are more likely to leave it than if it is visible from the street.

If you register with UPS/Fedex, they'll send you emails or texts when it is delivered. Or you can select that option with Amazon.

Yes, this is very personal to one's drivers. I get a lot of packages and I work nights, so mine have been trained not to ring the bell by the sight of me in a bathrobe. Then again I have a vestibule, so leaving packages silently is reasonable behavior.

I agree that it would be nice if one could give instructions. But I don't think they'd have time to call everybody.

I think if I didn't have a vestibule I'd get a box of reasonable size, like the old tin milk boxes, and label it to try to get drivers to put packages in the box. That way at least they're not sitting out looking tempting.

UPS got seriously obnoxious about requiring signatures on all of our packages, including ones that did not require them (they claimed that my phone charger from Amazon required a signature. Amazon and I disagreed with them).

So I think it varies by area. UPS pushed us hard to sign up for their premium service thing, which made me wonder if that's why they started requiring the signature.

When we lived on Ellington, our UPS driver was fantastic- he always came around 8pm (when we were home) and was always careful of our cats.

If you are worried about theft, another option is to get your packages sent to Tags.
