Yes, this is very personal to one's drivers. I get a lot of packages and I work nights, so mine have been trained not to ring the bell by the sight of me in a bathrobe. Then again I have a vestibule, so leaving packages silently is reasonable behavior.
I agree that it would be nice if one could give instructions. But I don't think they'd have time to call everybody.
I think if I didn't have a vestibule I'd get a box of reasonable size, like the old tin milk boxes, and label it to try to get drivers to put packages in the box. That way at least they're not sitting out looking tempting.
