I just got an email saying that Chinook is closing as of today. No word on how/why/etc.

Edited: The email looked a lot like their earlier newsletter emails. It read only:
Chinook is Closing.
After 10 wonderful years Chinook is closing. Our last day wil be Tuesday July 14th. We've greatly appreciated your business and value all of the relationships that have evolved from being part of the Davis Square community.
Our warmest thanks,
The Chinook Team.

Dang, I didn't even know they existed. Web page looks like it's a store I would have liked to visit :(.

Really? Huh. Nothing on their site.

Ugh, this news on top of HE closing (and --unrelated to Davis-- on top of the news about WBCN) is a bit much. I've shopped at Chinook, when they had stuff on sale that is, for years. Wonder why they closed suddenly rather than giving notice and having a closing sale...

If this isn't some sort of a prank or an accidental send-out (and I'm not ruling out either), the only thing I can think of would be bankruptcy or the owner deciding "Screw this, I'm done."

I've gone in the place now and then, but they never seemed to be really doing a high turn over in terms of merchandise.
I'm sorry they're going, but don't feel shocked.

Could you please post the entire e-mail? I'm baffled that a business would choose to suddenly close in this manner instead of having a shutdown sale.

Wow, what a sudden, short email. What a shame.

I walked by the store a half hour ago and they are, indeed, already closed. There were signs in the window that repeated the email above.

Yeah, professionally printed from the looks of it. Guess they were planning this for a while.

Oh, I dunno. I could whip something up on my computer in the morning and have a half dozed colour copies by that afternoon.

mods: could we have a "closed businesses" tag to go along with our local businesses tag? it seems that there are lots of things that *used* to be here that get discussed regularly and that there are a fair number of vacant storefronts and or recent closures. i don't mean to sound morbid or to star some sort of community storefront deathwatch but the tag may be appropriate topic management given the economic realities at hand.

This sounds like a good idea, though retro-tagging all of it could be a pain.

jodi, I've added the tag and done some retro-tagging, but I need help with this task. Could you volunteer to go through the 'restaurants' category and add the 'closed businesses' tag to appropriate entries there? Thanks.

(I've already gone through 'history' and 'local businesses' and 'news', but I'd welcome a second look at those as well as any other categories you choose to dive into.)

Not Surprised..

I've shopped at Chinook for small gifts and the occasional shirt or two over the past few years. A nice store, and the woman who runs it is very nice. Over the past 6+ months though, you could tell the place was struggling. They switched brands of clothes that they carried, inventory was much sparser, and they made a last ditch effort to sell skateboard decks and supplies.

I hope Black and Blues (Woman's clothing shop next door) survives. My wife really likes the place and I've had great luck getting gifts for her there.

I walked in one time, I thought the clothes were really cool... till I saw the price tags. Seriously, $60 for a t-shirt? In the lest Ed Hardy-ish neighborhood in the city?

I loved the fleece stuff of the early days

esp. the throw blankets, baby blankets and hats & mittens for kids... that was my go-to place for that stuff.
