Sadly, my roommates and I are looking at the possibility of having to get the locks changed on our front door. We live near Harvard Square. Anyone have recommendations for a Cambridge/Somerville locksmith they really like? And, what's a reasonable price range we should expect them to charge us? Thanks.

I just realized that I never changed my locks after buying my place (our dear seller, I hope you are not reading this).  I searched old posts, and the posts under "key and lock" were dated in 2011 or earlier.  Are there recent recommendations for locksmiths?  For changing the lock, do I need to buy brand new ones?  Or I have to somehow take it apart and bring it to a hardware store?  Or I should ask a locksmith to come?  What is a reasonable price to change the lock for the front door?

Thanks,

This is a followup to a post I made a while ago asking what happened to Cambridge Lock and Security:

http://davis-square.livejournal.com/2442328.html

I again needed a locksmith, and this time I called Sir Locksalot, explained my situation, and he informed me that Tom (the owner of Cambridge Lock) closed their physical store on Broadway, but was still in business. He told me he could do what I needed no problem, but gave me the current number for Cambridge Lock so he wasn't taking business away from a friend of his.

So, since Sir Locksalot was such a stand-up guy, I figured he deserved a plug:

Sir Locksalot: 781-391-5801

And the updated number for Cambridge Lock: 617-504-5625

The place in ball square. I called their number but it's apparently no longer in service. Are they out of business?

If that's the case, can someone recommend a different locksmith?

Hello--

I just read through the old entries tagged "key and lock" but nothing seemed quite right, so I wanted to ask here.

Lost my keys yesterday, including the only key I had to my '94 Infiniti. Sometimes it's possible to get a key made cheaply by using the VIN, but that can be difficult with an older car. Anybody know of someone who can do that?

The other option is a locksmith, of course, and I'm prepared for that to be pricey. Can someone recommend one that does good work and is hopefully on the more affordable end of pricey?

FWIW, my key doesn't have a security chip or anything.

ETA: I don't have a key to copy, so I can't really use any recs of key-copying places.

While we're on the subject of Ball Square businesses, a few updates I thought might interest DSLJ folks:

1) DSLJ favorite rec Paramount Bicycle Repair has moved to Ball Square (from Powderhouse). The new location is in the small strip of stores extending up Bristol Rd (also includes Stinky's, a dry cleaner, a cleaning service, maybe something else?) and seems nice.
Tyler says "spread the word!" about the move, and I'm sure he'd be glad to have people stop by and say hi.

2) The former Urban Gourmet space has signs up advertising help wanted for what will presumably be the new restaurant opening there.
The signs refer to "Eat at Jumbo's: pizza, wings, and grill"
I guess it's meant to be associated with Tufts in some way . . .
(In case anyone is interested in the jobs and you can't read it in the image, it says to email info@eatatjumbos.com or call 617-571-3611.)
pic of sign= )

Personally, I'm a little disappointed, as this really doesn't seem all that different than stuff we already have (On Broadway/Soundbites Grill specifically), I had hoped for a little more variety.  I am glad to see something going in there though, after so long with an empty storefront, and I shall hope for the best! (with vegetarian options, plz ;)

3) Speaking of empty storefronts, the space on Broadway next to White Hen, most recently a real estate office (I think once a CVS?) which has been empty for a little while is displaying building permits indicating it is being converted to a dance studio. I know nothing else, just what it says on the permit, but I'm excited to see the space filled and this seems like it could be a neat addition to the neighborhood.
ETA: a large banner now says "The New Home of Mary Flynn Murphy Dance Studio" and says it will open March 2nd.

4) The Pub (formerly Powderhouse Pub, i.e. the one next to Kelly's. Really, it's just called "The Pub" now.) is now hosting Stump Trivia on Wednesday nights. This is in addition to Soundbites hosting Stump on Mondays (which I assume they are still doing, though I haven't checked, as they are listed on the Stump site).

(hmm, no "Ball Square" tag? would it make sense to have one?)

Hi All,
first time poster with a quick question.

I was recently given a car starter for Christmas. My car is a 2005 so in order to set it up they need the security chip from my spare key. I'm now having to go back to the dealership to get a new spare. I've heard (but could be completely wrong) that some hardware stores are able to copy keys at a much cheaper rate without the chip and it's just as effective as a spare...

Has anyone tried this or know of a local spot that has mastered the art of saving me $100!

Thanks!

I'm looking to have my locks re-cored so that a single key opens the front, back, and basement doors (instead of the 5 keys required now).  I'm looking for recommendations for reputable area locksmiths.  Many of the local listings seem to be hijacked by a single national company with local looking listings.  Their numbers all go to the same dispatching service and it's impossible to find a "real" local locksmith.

Thanks in advance!

We have one of those mailboxes built into the wall with a locking door.

I lost the key. It's smaller and thinner than a regular door key, with simple rectangular prongs; when I moved in and made copies of the apartment keys, the hardware-store folks said they couldn't copy this mailbox key.

Any recommendations for what to do if I can't find it?

Does anyone know a good locksmith in the area? I need to have a few locks re-keyed.

I've called A-OK Lock and Security and Carrol Locksmiths and their prices seem to be fairly similar, so I thought I'd see if anyone had any positive or negative experiences.

Thanks!

Hey neighbors, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good locksmith? My coat was stolen or lost in the Harvard Square area with my wallet and keys in the pocket, so I need to change my front door lock. Thanks!
