For those of us on the other side of the border: The Cambridge Police Review and Advisory Board has a vacancy.

This is the civilian body which reviews findings in complaints against the police.

This is potentially a tremendous opportunity for a Cambridge resident who cares about justice in policing to get involved at the local level, here in our community.

Five year term, no pay, typically one evening a month (last Weds).

I'd do it myself, but haven't the spare spoons.

We're just a few days away from the birdhouse launch when we'll be celebrating spring, meeting other folks in the community and hanging beautiful birdhouses in Davis Square!  We are looking for volunteers! (and if you still want to make a birdhouse you have time!)
We expect this year to be the biggest birdhouse day ever! We're really excited for you to join in!

Saturday 4/16 - 10am -  Davis Square community bike path.

On Saturday, you are welcome to volunteer to help in a number of roles:

  • Birdhouse preparing (birdhouses will be water-proofed and prepared with wire for hanging)

  • Coffee / food passing out -- (we have a number of donations coming in)

  • Ladder helping -- moving and holding ladders for those hanging birdhouses

  • Birdhouse hanging -- expert ladder users will place prepped birdhouses in trees.

  • SMILING. that's right. Just straight up smiling. =)

If you need to drop your birdhouse off ahead of time because you can't make it Saturday, please message me and we'll make a plan for your birdhouse!
See you there!

Birdhouse team 2016!

[I posted this as a reply to the original post, Somerville looking for solar energy volunteers, but I think it should be more widely seen.]

I attended this meeting hosted by the Commission on Energy Use and Climate Change. The city is serious about submitting an appliction (very soon) for the Solarize Mass process. Learn more about that here: http://www.masscec.com/solarizemass

If they are approved, they want to roll it out also very quickly. If successful with their application, they envision the process of outreach to neighbors in late spring and this coming summer. Then a big wave of installations follow the sign ups. The idea is that with a certain number of committed folks, they get a certain price, discounted for a bulk purchase. But there are tiers, and if more people sign up the price might even drop. Depends on how the outreach goes, of course.

At the meeting, they were sensitive to both the concerns and issues of renters and landlords. Questions were raised about shared housing like condos as well. Seemed like a good cross-section of folks with appropriate issues. Little minority representation, however.

They are looking for volunteers to commit to this in the very short term, because they need folks for their application process. If you would consider being a solar ambassador, don't wait--contact them for more details soon. Volunteer work might mean presentations at local community meetings, booths at festivals, answering email questions, that sort of stuff.

Other interesting tidbits: they want to investigate providers that offer both ownership and leased scenarios. So you won't necessarily have to drop big money on this. And they are interested in business owners and other community groups being involved too. It's not limited to homeowners. Another cool tidbit: one of our neighbors is associated with the Google Sunroof project, and that began a discussion of how that resource could help residents investigate suitability and make decisions. If you haven't seen it, check it out: https://www.google.com/get/sunroof#p=0

I got this email because I filled out the city's survey a while back on solar energy. Passing it along in case it might be of interest:

Thank you for responding to our interest survey on solar energy earlier this year. You are receiving this email because you expressed interest in potentially volunteering for a residential solar program. The City and the Commission on energy use and climate change are working on developing a solarize program that will offer competitive pricing and expedited installation for Somerville residents and businesses. If we are selected for this state-supported program, the City will be organizing a volunteer-driven campaign. Bringing more solar electricity to Somerville is a community effort, and we can’t do it without you! The city has a goal of being carbon neutral by 2050, and you as a homeowner can help reach out to other homeowners and spread the word.

Please join us October 14th 2015 at 7:45pm at the Tufts Administration Building 167 Holland St Somerville, MA 02144. This is the monthly meeting of the Commission of Energy Use and Climate Change. One of the items we will be discuss is the residential solar initiative, outlining what the program will entail and the range of volunteer roles that are part of the program. No response is necessary. If you are unavailable to attend the meeting on 10/14, please let me know, and we can set up a one-on-one meeting or organize another time for interested volunteers.

Dear Generous Neighbors and Friends of HONK!

It's that time of year again. We are looking for housing for our many visiting musicians for this year's (10th anniversary!) festival. The festival will take place Friday, October 9th through Sunday, October 11th. Bands are coming from near and far -- Somerville, Vermont, Seattle, Austin, Detroit, Chicago, New York, Montreal and Paris!

Can you help? We urgently need places!

Please send to Trudi Cohen trudico@gmail.com:
  • Your name, address and phone number.
  • What precisely you can offer.
  • What pets you have.
  • What dates, between Wed. October 7th and Monday October 13th, you can offer

As you may know, HONK! could not happen without the generosity of the City of Somerville, local businesses and local residents like you. We are enormously grateful for any help you can offer. We especially appreciate places near Davis Square or the Red Line for musicians coming from far away without cars.

Heartfelt thanks!

Trudi Cohen, for HONK!

September 26th is the 10th annual “What the Fluff? A Tribute to Union Square Invention”, a festival celebrating the creation of Fluff in Somerville almost 100 years ago. The 2015 theme will be “Fluff X” – like the Super Bowl, Fluff is now rocking a Roman numeral!

The festival absolutely could not happen without our amazing volunteer crew. If you're looking for a unique Somerville Saturday, volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts in a wide variety of tasks. From the prize booth to kiddie games to the cooking contest, there are jobs to fit every personality. There are opportunities for you and friends to work together, and for mature children to work with their parents. We may be looking for a few expert volunteers to step into "fluff captain" roles so if you covet the straw hat, please let me know.

The Festival is at Union Square Somerville on September 26th (raindate September 27th) from 3 to 7 PM, with volunteers needed in two-hour shifts from 12:30 until 8:00 PM. If you can join us, please let me (Karin) know at volunteer AT unionsquaremain DOT com.

May the fluff be with you!

Most of you know, or know of, this group's awesome moderator Ron Newman. Yesterday Ron had surgery on his eye for a retinal detachment. This has a tough recovery period - he's disabled for the next month or two. He won't be able to do much of anything and could really use some help. If there's anything you can do to help out Ron, including meal prep, errands, or anything else, please let me know! Ron is on Day St, a short walk from the T.

In case you're wondering, my name is Julie and I'm Ron's neighbor. He just asked me post this on his behalf, since he probably won't be able to use a computer for a while. I'll pass along all messages to him.

Edit: We've created a page for Ron on lotsahelpinghands.com. If you don't know it, this is a fantastic free resource. We set up a calendar showing what Ron needs and when. Just sign up here: https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/729457/

Then you can check off which tasks you can do and see what's still needed! Please share this link so that we can get as many people helping out as possible. Thanks!

I'm seeking volunteers (especially facepainters) for the most adorable event in Boston! It’s called Duckling Day and is put on by the nonprofit Friends of the Public Garden. We need a huge volunteer presence and we're right on Boston Common so it’s an easy MBTA red line trip!

Here's the 411 - please contact me (Karin) at events@friendsofthepublicgarden.org if you're interested.

Duckling Day, an event from the nonprofit Friends of the Public Garden
Sunday, May 10th (Mother's Day!)
10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Boston Common, Boston

This is a celebration of the classic children’s book “Make Way for Ducklings” and many of the kids are dressed as ducklings which is the cutest thing ever. There is about 90 minutes of fun activities for the under-6 crowd (magician, juggler, puppet shows, facepainting, outdoor play equipment) and massages for the moms – and then the Mayor speaks and the kids and families form an amazingly adorable parade that ends at the Public Garden.

Volunteers needed: anytime between 7:30 AM until 1:30 PM - there is an early shift and a late shift
Tasks: pretty basic – helping with set-up, registration and check-in (which is a big job requiring lots of personnel!), and helping the different activity people keep the activity areas running smoothly. I do also need people interested in facepainting. You don't have to be a pro, just reasonably interested/able to work with kids in this fun way!

Please fill out this form if you are able to volunteer before, during, and/or after Giving Tuesday Somerville, and we will contact you with more info! Please email georgie@respondinc.org if you have any questions.

Hey, Davis Square. Five years ago, my musical Never After played at the Somerville Theatre; a couple of years ago, I invited you to a read/sing-through of another musical, Fire and Ice. Now I'm looking for readers for a NON-musical play, Twelve Nights.

To be done properly, it will require twelve readers, six female-presenting and six male-presenting (plus one for stage directions). There are no small roles, nor any big ones, really. I already know that I'll rewrite the play with six roles, as it's too unwieldy, but I believe it'll be fun for a read-through now regardless. If there's sufficient interest beyond twelve readers, I'll reserve a room at the library (as I did with Fire and Ice.

What's this play about? Friendship, sex, religion, and mid-life crises. It's a comedy of manners, a modern take on what happens when a love potion a la Midsummer Night's Dream sends a group of friends into a tailspin. I'm told that it's witty, interesting, and timely.

Comment or email me at ceelove [at] speakeasy (dot) net, and I'll get you a PDF of the Twelve Nights script.

The Fluff Festival still needs some volunteers for the later shifts - 4 to 6 PM and especially 6 to 8 PM. Here's more info:

Produced by Union Square Main Streets, "What the Fluff" doesn’t just celebrate the genius of Archibald Query, who invented Fluff here in Union Sq. in 1917. It also celebrates the creativity of the artists, musicians, bakers, and other citizens who join together to celebrate our hometown sweet in the most memorable ways. This year’s theme is Steampunk Fluff! Volunteers will receive a commemorative Fluff button, and a voucher for 50% off a Fluff shirt. (Volunteers working 4+ hours get a free t-shirt!)

Volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts in a wide variety of tasks – from the prize booth to kiddie games to the cooking contest, there are jobs to fit every personality. There are opportunities for friends to work together, and for mature children to work with their parents.

The Festival is at Union Square Somerville on September 27th from 3 to 7 PM, with volunteers needed from noon until 8 PM. (rain date is 9/28) To sign up or to find out more, please contact Karin at volunteer@unionsquaremain.org

As the HONK! festival approaches, we are starting to think about the ecstatic noise, fun, and logistical challenges of bringing this spectacular festival to Davis Square. There's a lot of dancing, singing, and honking that needs to happen Columbus Day Weekend, but we could also use help setting up tables, serving meals to musicians, selling t shirts, marshaling the parade, and more.

If you're interested in volunteering at the HONK! Festival this year, join us Sunday September 14 at 6PM for a volunteer party & info session at sprout's studios at 339R Summer St. Somerville. There will be food, music by the Second Line Brass Band, and a mini parade to Davis Square. Bring your friends! If you can't make it, or you have any questions, let me know at volunteer@honkfest.org. Get in touch if you have any questions, and we hope to see you soon!

WHAT: HONK! Volunteer Party
WHEN: Sunday September 14 at 6PM
WHERE: sprout's studios @ 339R Summer St. Somerville

We do need one or two more folk to help at the Spring Used Book Sale - this Thursday and Friday 12-4pm. Light work (tidying books mostly) - an hour or 2 would be fantastic. You get paid in books! Works for high-school service hours too. Email friendssomervillepubliclibrary@gmail.com for details.

May 15-18 the Friends of the Somerville Public Library Spring Book Sale is coming up. There is also talk that the bake sale may make a guest appearance on Saturday May 17th too. Again the book sale coincides with PorchFest (nice!) - and we will welcome local band Luddy Mussy to the library...
