I just saw a sign on Teriyaki House (on Broadway near Powderhouse; used to be Doo Wee & Rice, and East Asia before that) saying "closed during transition" and "Mint Indian Eatery". I will miss their marinated rice plates, bao baos, and crispy chicken hearts! Anyone know anything about the new place?

As many of you are aware, there are two new food establishments proposed in Davis Square. There will be neighborhood meetings to discuss each of these proposals next week on Tuesday, January 26th. The first is the proposal for Opa Greek Yeeros at 378 Highland Ave. (Planning Staff Report).  The meeting will be from 6:00 to 6:45 at the site, 378 Highland Ave., which is the former Kick@ss Cupcakes location.  The second is the proposal for Oath Craft Pizza at 280 Elm St. (Planning Staff Report).  The second meeting will be at 7:00 PM, also at 378 Highland Ave.  Both matters have or will be continued until the February 3 ZBA meeting. (edited to update meeting times and address)

Zaytouna Cafe, in between Yummy Hut and Lemon Thai, has finally opened! We ordered dinner from there tonight and it was very tasty, especially the grape leaves. They make everything from scratch and are very knowledgeable about which items are vegan, vegetarian, and so on. And they're on GrubHub and Foodler!

On September 22nd I walked into Diva around noon with 2 colleagues and got takeout lunch buffet. My total came to $10.65, which I paid with credit card. The waiter was rude, and I didn't feel obliged to tip since I was just getting takeout. Walking back to the office, one of my colleagues said he saw the waiter add $2 to my credit card receipt.

The food was okay.

I waited until the charge cleared, and sure enough, it was for $12.65. I disputed the $2 with the credit card company, which gave it back to me immediately. I'll be eating elsewhere in the future.

Be careful using credit cards at Diva Indian Bistro.

I just stumbled on this, which is a few weeks old, but I haven't seen it posted.

Tenoch, which has locations in Medford Square and in the North End, is moving into Kickass Cupcakes' old storefront in October. This would be the Kickass Cupcakes storefront closer to Davis on the corner of Highland and Cutter, near When Pigs Fly and where M3 used to be.

I like this.  Tenoch is awesome.  I think it's better than Anna's and Chipotle and it also has a somewhat different focus -- a more adventurous menu of tortas and tacos.  They have burritos as well, but they aren't the centerpiece.

That block is a little tricky given how far down Highland from Davis it is and the implications that has for foot traffic.  The stretch of Highland from Davis to Grove is pretty lifeless outside of Five Horses and then there's Kenney Park and Rite Aid.  A great number of people who walk home from the T in that direction do so via the Community Path.  It's a little out of sight, out of mind, so fingers crossed that they do well.

It's that time of year again!  Brown School Community Discount Cards are now available at Mr. Crepe and Davis Squared, both located in Davis Square.  $10 will get you a year of discounts at local restaurants and shops. (Complete list under LJ-cut below)   We are happy to add several new vendors this year:  Brooklyn Boulders, iYo, Soundbites, The Biscuit and The Book Shop.

All of the money from the card sales goes to the Benjamin G. Brown School PTA.   The Brown School is a public K-6 school located at the corner of Willow & Kidder Ave.  Mr. Crepe and D-Squared are very generous to sell the cards for us.  They do not get any $$ from selling the cards.  Students from the school will also be selling the cards in mid-September.

Thank you for supporting the Brown School!

Are you going to ArtBeat? Stop by the Brown School booth on Saturday, July 21st from 11-5pm in 7 Hills Park (behind the Holland St T entrance) and purchase a Brown School Community Card. (**this is a new location from previous years**)  The card gives you great discounts at local businesses.

The card is valid Sept 1, 2012-Aug 31, 2013. It can be used an unlimited number of times throughout the year. (vendor restrictions listed on card) Thanks to Central Bank for covering our printing costs, 100% of the sales go directly to the Brown School PTA. The Brown School is located at the corner of Kidder Ave and Willow Ave, and is the oldest public school in Somerville. Cards cost $10 each, and can save you hundreds.

We are happy to have many of the old favorites participate in this year's card, and welcome our new additions, 3 Little Figs and Davis Squared.

I noticed that there was a sign in the window of the Kickass Cupcakes Dairy Bar for a new store, Maximum Hesh, which will apparently be geared towards skateboarders, and wondered what that meant regarding the Dairy Bar itself. It finally occurred to me yesterday to stop in to Kickass and find out what's up, and here it is: they've moved their baking operations out of the actual store and somewhere "down the street", so they'll still be selling everything the Dairy Bar had, except that it'll be in the same space in which the cupcakes are sold. Right now, they seem to be working on the exact setup, but the refrigerated case w/milk, etc. is there right now, and you can certainly buy things, although you may need to ask for help taking things out of case
