Hi friends!

I have a friend coming from out of town who will be visiting for too long to keep in my house (I don't want to stress my roommates). We need a relatively cheap hotel/motel/whatever from Monday afternoon to Friday morning the last week of March.

Neither of us will have a car, so T accessible would be heavily preferred. We are collectively kinda brokeasses, so cheap is also preferred. I recognize this is asking the impossible, but yanno, DSLJ is full of clever and helpful people who might be able to pull the impossible off.

Thank you!

The folks who run Morrison House B&B are finally almost done with work on a second location down the street. They are now taking reservations for October and forward.

I'm not associated with them, but my mom has stayed at Morrison House a bunch of times and enjoyed it. I'm assuming the new place will be up to their usual standards.

Hey everyone. My friends and I are buying a multi-family so we can begin a new life together as a happy chosen family. To do this, they need to sell their condo. It is the sunny upper unit in an old two-family home just under 1,000 square feet with a finished attic. One bedroom, kitchen, living room, office/small bedroom, and bath on first floor. Master suite with bedroom and bath plus insulated storage on second floor. Large fenced yard. Two deeded parking spots.

The property is at 28 Foch St. It hasn't posted yet but the price is dropping again and they will be having an open house this Sunday.

Sadly we couldn't afford to stay in the Davis area, but we are only going to Watertown so we won't be strangers. Thanks for your interest.

Really, [livejournal.com profile] ext_1771774 ? Why? And how is the Bromfield Road fire at all relevant to whether we can host international travelers in our apartments?

I realize this is rather far afield from Davis Square, but can anyone in the community recommend a decent, affordable b & b in New Hampshire, preferably one on a lake or the coast? Thanks.

I wanted to attend the ResiStat meeting last night but wasn't able to. Is anyone who was there able to post some of the highlights?

Somerville Patch has a good summary of the proposals for a hotel in Davis Square (where the farmer's market is now) here: http://somerville.patch.com/articles/davis-square-hotel-what-developers-have-proposed.

Also, you can go to the City's website to see much of the submitted material here: http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/ospcd/economic-development/davis-square-hotel-project

Other information can be found at an independent website created by a neighbor: http://herberthotel.net/

This Tuesday, March 5, will be the first community meeting regarding the hotel proposals for the Day/Herbert municipal parking lot. The meeting will run from 6 to 7:30 pm at Community Baptist Church, 31 College Avenue.

For those of you interested in the proposal by the city to solicit bids for a hotel in Davis Square, a neighbor has set up a web site that tries to collect information in one place. It is http://www.herberthotel.net

An extensive discussion took place in this group here: http://davis-square.livejournal.com/3091944.html

I believe an advisory committee - made up of some really good people - is supposed to meet this week to review proposals.

According to the RFP, the Mayor and the Board of Aldermen are supposed to make their decisions in February/March. But Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz said there will be a full community process and that a decision isn't likely until May! That seems reasonable.

UPDATE:
The Davis Square Hotel Technical Advisory Committee had a first meeting Friday, 2/22.The committee agreed that it would be important to hear from residents about their top priorities with respect to the hotel development before recommending a developer to the Mayor and full Board of Aldermen.

The first community meeting is scheduled for:
TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2013 at 6:00 -- 7:30 pm at the COMMUNITY BAPTIST CHURCH on COLLEGE AVE.

PLEASE HELP GET THE WORD OUT TO YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS.

The City of Somerville is taking bids from hotel developers to buy the public metered parking lot at Day and Herbert Streets, where a weekly farmers' market now operates every Wednesday from mid-May through late November.

As far as I can tell, the city has established no public process whatsoever to involve the neighborhood. They are holding a "pre-bidder's conference" on Tuesday, January 15 at 11 am at the northeast corner of the parking lot. They have not advertised the meeting at all to local residents, but it's open to the public. I urge any interested neighbors to show up and make clear that the city needs to include us in the land disposition process.

I found these two documents on the city web site:
Request for Proposals RFP #13-53: Davis Square Hotel Project
Legal Notice: RFP #13-53 = Davis Square Hotel Project

Also, here's an earlier City of Somerville page about a Davis Square Hotel, from when the city last tried to interest hotel developers in 2009. This page includes a Hotel Demand Study written in 2007.

[My own personal position: this could be good for Davis Square, but it needs to be designed sensitively, not tower over the rest of the neighborhood, and not present a blank wall to either Day or Herbert street. It's also essential to find a new nearby location for the farmers' market.]

ETA: An earlier discussion of this topic from February 2007.

Howdy!

I'm hoping to find a couple of spots here in Davis that could handle 15-20 people for weekly meetups and whatnot, hopefully with a projector for speakers, etc. Any suggestions?

A couple of months ago I posted a query to the livejournal for a place to stay in the Davis Square area (see http://davis-square.livejournal.com/2847544.html). There were lots of good suggestions, but I ended up with two that were not suggested and thought I would just repost with their info for future reference....

Hey wise-folks of the live journal,
I'm going to be in the Boston area in early June and need to stay at a hotel for about a week. I'd love to stay near/around Davis (got to also be near the train) and was looking for suggestions that are nice, but won't break the bank.

Any suggestions?

Hello all,

I am looking for advice. When my family comes to visit from out of town, they normally stay at the Homewood Suites (previously Hawthorn Suites) on Mass Ave just over the Alrington border. It's an easy walk from our house, on the bus line, and includes breakfast. But the price has gone up considerably in the past few years. Just a few years ago, they could stay for around $160/night (which adds up when you stay a week or more!). Now it's $270/night! I feel like that is getting pretty close to Boston-proper rates. Does anybody recommend any other nearby hotels that might be comparable or cheaper in price? They won't have a car, so walking or T distance is a plus. I'll do my own research too, of course, but wanted to see what others suggest. I have already looked at and passed on the suggestions of Morrison House and A Cambridge Inn.

Thanks!

Ok. I'm going to try this one more time and again if I have to. I need suggestions from the Davis Sq. community. Each year I visit the area and stay at Morrison House B&B. Well I waited too long for reservations and they are booked on the weekend of ART BEAST (festival) July 17th. I need some place to stay - 4-5 days, must be cheap, clean near Davis and the Red Line. Anyone have any suggestions???

Has anyone stayed or had a visitor stay at Hawthorn Suites at Alewife Brook Parkway and Mass Ave? A friend stayed there a few years ago and was reasonably happy, but I don't recall whether he cared about net connectivity, and the person who's visiting in the spring definitely will. The site says "free high speed Internet," but I've known hotels to use that to mean a shared 56k modem line....

Last night, the Licensing Commission granted The Burren a probationary extension of hours to 2 am on Friday and Saturday nights. They will review it again in six months. Former mayor Dorothy Kelly Gay spoke in support. I didn't attend this very crowded meeting, but a Somerville Journal reporter did, and you can read her report here.

While that was going on upstairs, I attended the rather placid Davis Square Task Force meeting downstairs. There's not really much news to report from it:

Boloco and Chipotle both gave presentations. The founder of Boloco handed out free mini-burritos and coupons for $1 burritos. Chipotle expects to open on July 1 in the former Buck-a-Book space. They will have 34 seats indoors and another 20 out on the plaza across from Starbucks. They will serve beer, but not margaritas (those would require a full liquor license). If anyone wants to try Chipotle before then, they just opened one at Wellington Circle in Medford. All Chipotle restaurants are company-owned, not franchises.

Mayor Curtatone commissioned a study of hotel demand in Somerville, which you can read on the city's web site. The study suggests a 100-125 room hotel on one of three vacant sites in Davis Square -- the Day-Herbert city parking lot, the private parking lot behind One Davis Square, or the Buena Vista garage next to Harvard Vanguard. I asked whether a hotel of this size could be built within the current zoning's 4-story/50-foot height limit, and the city officials said yes. Sara Rosenfeld reminded us that Mayor Capuano made a similar push for a Davis Square hotel back in 1992, but nothing had happened at the time.

Discussion of the bike path connection through Davis Square was postponed until the next meeting, whose date hasn't yet been set.

I have a couple friends wanting to visit me for a few days soon and my apartment is totally unlivable, not to mention i havent even got a proper couch. Are there any hotels within walking distance of Davis? Or at least, very close to a t stop so it's easy for us to get around without a car? The cheaper the better. the only thing they need is two beds and a bathroom. We definitely will only be using our feet or public transport to get around and I'd really like to show them the delights of davis without making them broke or wasting time with transportation. I'm just completely unknowledgable about this; any time relatives have wanted to visit they stay with my uncle out in acton for free and have cars. Crazy suburbanites, all of them. The visit will probably happen in early march, if that helps.
[identity profile] journeystar.livejournal.com
My parents are going to try and come visit me on the 16th-18th of this month, however it seems all hotels are over $100 a night! Does anyone have any suggestions for cheaper alternatives in the area? Smaller motels? Bed and breakfasts? Someplace that won't be horribly expensive? I appreciate your help :)

I have some relatives and pseudo relatives coming into town who don't want to crash here. Where would you suggest putting folks up? Relatively inexpensive, but also not hard to find.
