I have a couple friends wanting to visit me for a few days soon and my apartment is totally unlivable, not to mention i havent even got a proper couch. Are there any hotels within walking distance of Davis? Or at least, very close to a t stop so it's easy for us to get around without a car? The cheaper the better. the only thing they need is two beds and a bathroom. We definitely will only be using our feet or public transport to get around and I'd really like to show them the delights of davis without making them broke or wasting time with transportation. I'm just completely unknowledgable about this; any time relatives have wanted to visit they stay with my uncle out in acton for free and have cars. Crazy suburbanites, all of them. The visit will probably happen in early march, if that helps.

there is 1 right next to alewife(that I can't remember the name because it changes) that is usually $80 or less; 2beds and a bathroom. I believe that would be the cheapest you will get. GoodLuck

if we're thinking of the same one... it's on mass ave, across the alewife parkway just inside arlington. my parents stayed there one time. not very accessible by foot to alewife unfortunately in my opinion, despite how close it is.

No, there's a suisse chalet (or at least that's what it used to be called) on route 2. It's walking distance to alewife, although it's not a particularly wonderful walk.

I lost a friend for life after suggesting that she stay in that slum hotel. Just avoid it.

No, but the 77 stops right there, and then goes to Porter and Harvard. Also 79 and 350 to Alewife (but less frequent, and at morning rush hour can get caught in traffic at the 2/16 intersection for so long, taking the bus to Porter is faster.)

Stay away from that Suisse Chalet. The abandoned building next door to it has been left to rot for at least fifteen years, and now looks like a crack den.

If you want something rock-bottom cheap I believe that it is possible to get a 2-person room at the hostel on Hemenway Street (in the Fenway area). Bunk beds, no storage other than lockers, and public bathrooms; but you'll meet a lot of friendly traveling foreign students.

There is Morrison House B&B (http://www.morrisonhousebnb.com/)

It is not far from where College and Morrison meet.

It's a no-brainer! The Morrison Ave B&B. It's almost on College Ave and practically in Davis Square. Support small business!

There are tons and tons of B&Bs between porter and central that are around $100/night for 2 people, 1 bed. I can't really remember the names but I think just some general searching would find some things. If you called and it's not a peak weekend, they might have 2-bed rooms or something like that.

If you want cheaper than that, I think you'd have to go with that somewhat rundown motel on route 2, which is about half the price (and less than half as nice I imagine) and about a 10 minute walk from Alewife.

At least about five years ago, it was not horribly sketchy. It wasn't nice, but it was reasonably clean.

http://www.acambridgehouse.com/ is on Mass Ave, well north of Porter, and an easy walk to Davis. Cheap for this area, which is to say, not very cheap.

We have our Board members stay at A Cambridge House when they're in town. It's a nice place.

My parents stayed at A Cambridge House eariler this month. They enjoyed it, but their room had no dresser at all, so they had to live out of their suitcases.

The Hawthorn Suites hotel, at Mass. Ave. and Route 16 in Arlington, is about 15 minutes' walk to Davis, and a shorter walk to Alewife. The frequent #77 bus goes right by this hotel.

Otherwise, your best bet is one of the hotels in Harvard Square.

one of my friends was staying there a couple summers ago, and had all her stuff stolen by someone on the cleaning staff. they claimed she'd abandoned the room (which she had not). it was an ordeal to get it back. (which she did - most of it at least) the culprit was fired by the hotel, but she said because of that she'd never stay there again. felt it to be a bit too sketchy.

There's also a hotel at the rotary by the Fresh Pond Shopping Center. Right past all of the stores, I think Wild Harvest or something like that is at the end. I can't remember the name, it's a chain hotel, though, and I think there's a 99 Restaurant attached. Relatives have stayed there and found it OK. It's not too far from Alewife to walk, and some hotels run a shuttle. Sorry I can't remember the details, but do a search and I'm sure you'll find it!

I'm not sure if you're serious or facetious. People hated that building right after it went up. They hated it so much that the city required the owner to change the façade even though it was already open.

I'm deadly serious. Who doesn't like small businesses getting plowed under and replaced with glorious corporate architecture?

Date: 2007-02-23 02:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] julishka.livejournal.com
the facade had to be changed because the owners did NOT comply with their original plan (which allowed them to build) to make the hotel blend in with the old architecture and feel of the area. i think this happened on their final inspection for occupancy, not after they opened. (but they may have been allowed to open while the facade was corrected.)

You might try posting on Craigslist that you are looking for a room and the dates. Someone might have a space you could use for a month that would be less than a hotel for a week.
