My parents are going to try and come visit me on the 16th-18th of this month, however it seems all hotels are over $100 a night! Does anyone have any suggestions for cheaper alternatives in the area? Smaller motels? Bed and breakfasts? Someplace that won't be horribly expensive? I appreciate your help :)

Have you tried Morrison House (http://www.morrisonhousebnb.com/)?

If they're full, Cambridge Gateway Inn (http://www.cambridgegatewayinn.com/) is advertising $89/night.

I've occasionally also had luck with hotels.com--they've got the Quality Inn in Lexington for $85/night.

Good luck!

I generally advise people against Cambridge Gateway (formerly Susse Chalet). It's not a long walk from Alewife but it's an unpleasant walk, and there's nothing to walk to except a bowling alley and the T station. No restaurants.

Well, there's a Bertucci's at the T station...

You could try the Morrison St. B& B in Davis.

Oops wait, they're full that weekend. Well, expensive hotels are just a thing about Boston. I would suggest trying a Priceline.com bid. You won't get very far below $100, but you might get $100 on the nose. That's about the best you hope for, when booking this late.

I have gotten a nice (3 star) hotel room in cambridge for $50/night through Priceline at the last minute. The key is not to be too picky about what neighborhood, I think. Or maybe I just got lucky.

or

My parents stayed at Morrison House B&B last time they came to visit. Not sure what their rates are.

The closest hotel to Davis Square is the Hawthorn Suites at Mass. Ave. and Route 16 in Arlington, just across the Cambridge line. You can walk there from Davis in 15 minutes. Even though this is a chain, I can't find their web site.

Their cheapest room is $169/night, a bit cheaper if you're a member of AAA or AARP.

The other Davis-area B&B is the Meacham Manor. I know nothing about it other than that people have mentioned it here before.

Nearby Cambridge has A Cambridge House, across from Pemberton Farms, and the Mary Prentiss Inn, a few blocks south of Porter Square.

Meacham Manor is good, friendly, clean and under $100 a night - even on weekends. At least last I checked.

Moving further into Cambridge, there's the Irving House and its sister, the Harding House.

Staying under $100 inside Rte 128 is just about impossible.

I am always searching for new ideas.

You might try The Friendly Inn on Cambridge Street near Harvard Square.

Hotel Tria is at Fresh Pond, not horribly far from Davis.
I did an "extend your weekend package" search for that weekend with two adults and got the price of $229.

That used to be called the Best Western Homestead; I did not know they had changed their name. You can walk to Alewife station from there. It's not a beautiful walk, through suburban strip-mall sprawl, but a lot better than from the Cambridge Gateway.

They did some remodeling and renamed it some time last year, and also added a Starbucks. The nice thing about this place, I think, is that it's right next to Whole Foods. If I were traveling I'd rather stay near Whole Foods (so I can maybe get healthier food to eat) instead of the other place right next to it, 99, or the likes of it.

99 is a restaurant, not another hotel.

If they're going to have a car, look at some of the things in Medford center like the Suites hotel there. But I wouldn't really expect to find under $100.

If money is the main limit (and a car is available), look at Waltham around 128. That set of hotels is more business than tourist focused, and had lower weekend rates the last time I checked.

Good luck!

Also there are lots of hotels around I-93 as you head north (look at Woburn for instance and then the surrounding towns)

True, but then you're really starting to get into 'nothing to walk to from the hotel' territory.

When I had a June wedding in 2002, I had guests stay at the Cambridge Gateway and the Quality Inn in Lexington (well, it was a Holiday Inn Express at the time). Both places offered good rates -- around 90 bucks.

Is that the one next to Denny's?

Yes. The Quality Inn is right there.
