Hi friends!

I have a friend coming from out of town who will be visiting for too long to keep in my house (I don't want to stress my roommates). We need a relatively cheap hotel/motel/whatever from Monday afternoon to Friday morning the last week of March.

Neither of us will have a car, so T accessible would be heavily preferred. We are collectively kinda brokeasses, so cheap is also preferred. I recognize this is asking the impossible, but yanno, DSLJ is full of clever and helpful people who might be able to pull the impossible off.

Thank you!

Maybe Harding House or Irving House or Mary Prentiss Inn? I don't know if any of these are really cheap anymore, though.

You might try the Midtown Hotel http://www.midtownhotel.com

Cambridge Gateway Inn is walking distance to Alewife, and has a reputation for being the cheapest hotel in the area. Also for being really nasty.

The "whatever" these days is Airbnb, which is consistently much cheaper than hotels, and there's many of them in the Davis area.

I don't think I'd send my worst enemy to Cambridge Gateway Inn.

That would have more rhetorical force coming from someone whose general approach to worst enemies is in the general vein of inviting them to sit down and talk it out over tea and cookies, but point taken.

I'd try airbnb shared in that situation. Shared meaning someone rents a room in their apartment.

Both are near Davis Square and have an option for an inexpensive room
I don't know what they have available.

I don't know much about it except that I pass it almost everyday and it's been there forever...
The Cameron Inn, Guesthouse. Great location right by the bike path. 5 minute walk to Davis.

There's a new hotel in Porter Square. It probably isn't cheap though. I was just looking at it riding past on the bus last night. It is called the Porter Square hotel.

Air bnb is going to be cheaper than any hotel, barring possibly the YMCA (there's one in Central Square but don't know if they still rent rooms). Try asking all your friends to ask all THEIR friends but I would check the air bnb site and I would do it ASAP--the last week of March is not far away at all. Good luck.

Another site to check is couchsurfing dot com. I have a friend in Allston who rents out a room this way.

La Quinta is one of the cheapest hotels around. It can be expensive during graduation season when every hotel is booked, but otherwise can be reasonably priced.

I don't know your friend's definition of cheap, but for an actually nice hotel that is reasonably priced, check Hyatt Place in Medford Square. It's right by the origin of the 94 and 96 bus lines so easy to get to Davis, and also the 134, 95, and 101 to the orange line, plus they have a free shuttle to the red and orange line stations. It includes free breakfast, and the rooms are clean and very comfortable. Again, not sure if it's the price range you're looking for, but it's worth a few minutes on the webpage to make sure.

I know that they are not for everyone, but when I travel I always stay at HI accredited youth hostels (a misnomer). I don't know anything about the Boston hostel other than it's quite new and right downtown. Some have private rooms if sharing space is an issue.

I will second both the Hosteling International suggestion, and the Couchsurfing one.

Couchsurfing is like AirBNB without the money. (People offer a place to stay for free.) The only thing about Couchsurfing is that most people only offer stays of a few days at most in any one place. But if your friends don't mind staying in different places, then it's definitely the cheapest option, and can be really nice meeting friendly, generous people.

Hostels are also the cheapest of the ones that cost money, and are very professionally run, and are full of people from all parts of the world. Usually you share rooms with several people, but you can book a room for a bunch of people at the same time, usually.

I haven't ever stayed in a La Quinta, but I am aware that they are known for being affordable, and since they are out of the way near Assembly Square, they are probably going to be extra cheap compared to anything anywhere near Davis.
