There are a number of posts on good optometrists and eye doctors, but what are the best local (ideally within 1 mile of Davis or Porter) places to buy new eyeglasses?

My priorities are durability, comfort, and reparability. I also don't want anything too flashy. I tend toward unisex wire frame glasses, but will try to keep an open mind if other styles seem more practical.

I bought my current pair of glasses because I thought they looked cute and they've made me miserable by continually snagging on things and having weird downward-directed screws that get loose easily. My previous pair of glasses frames snapped and can't be repaired. My dream would be frames that I'm still using 10 or 20 years from now.

I am not interested in purchasing online.

If you have information on turnaround time from ordering glasses to picking them up, that would be useful!

I'm looking for optometrist (and, possibly, ophthalmologist recs), specifically from people who:
  • have a very strong prescription and/or otherwise fairly problematic vision
  • wear glasses, not exclusively contacts
  • and have been unhappy with previous optometrists but are happy now
Obviously I'm hoping to find someone T-accessible from the greater Davis neighborhood (Somerville, Cambridge, Arlington).

Specifically I want someone who will not urge me to squint and strain during the eye tests to recognize letters, and then tell me I can see them fine because I recognized them, and someone who will straight up tell me if certain problems are uncorrectable, instead of gaslighting me that everything is fine.

I'm currently at Parelli, where (with Dr. Seligman) I'm the least unhappy I've ever been with optometrists, but I feel like I should aim for better than "least unhappy." And my opthalmology is at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston where I am profoundly underwhelmed.

(For what it's worth, the optician at Parelli, Matt, is fantastic.)

After a bad experience with $BigNameEyewareStore, I'm looking for someplace a little more friendly and personable. Any recommendations in the Davis Square area or Somerville in general? (I'll probably be doing bifocals and computer glasses, if that helps.)

Is there anyplace around here that takes donations of used eyeglasses? I've got several pairs to get rid of.

I checked the tags, but there's not one for opticians.  I need glasses made up, today, preferably.  Anybody have one they like?

(I've never heard anything good about Saragas, in the square -- not that I've heard anything bad, but surely someone would have praised it by now?)

Bonus points if it is somewhere that I can park easily -- which eliminates most of downtown Boston.

Hey, I broke my glasses frames yesterday, and am though my husband was able to repair them with superglue, I'm not confident in how long they will hold up.

I seem to recall that LensCrafters can make glasses on the same day you visit them (though I could be wrong), and am wondering a) if anybody can confirm this, and b) whether there are any local eyeglass places that provide the same service.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good dental and/or optometry practice near Davis or Porter? I know Gentle Dental is in the Porter Square Shopping Center, but does anyone have any experience with them? I have Metlife insurance for dental and Blue Cross for vision and will need to see somebody who is covered. In terms of what I'm looking for, well I have a really low pain tolerance and am easily squicked by visits to the dentist, so want someone who is gentle with a soothing personality who will warn me before they're about to stick something in my mouth (especially something that might hurt). As far as eye care, well I recently broke my glasses and am in need of new frames. I look for fun and funky frames in vibrant colors when possible, so a place that has a good selection of frames like this would be good. Thanks!

I finally have to admit to myself that cheaters no longer work and I need proper reading glasses. What recommendations do you all have for a local eyeglass store?

As a first time eyeglass wearer I'm mostly interested in a shop that will take the time to help me select the right kind of lenses for my usage and get the prescription fine tuned. I'm less concerned about a wide selection of frame styles. I'm no fashion plate.

Has anyone tried the place on Elm across from Posto?

So I appear to have left the "get new glasses before the reimbursement account year runs out" a bit too late, since Costco Optical in Everett has no appointments till next week. Any recommendations for getting my eyes looked at? I could still get the new glasses at Costco, after all.

Thanks!

Edit: I'm going to be seen at the ForEyes in Newton, very close to where I work, tomorrow at 3:30.

Well, I ruined my glasses(not just sitting on them this time), and my prescription expired years ago, plus my eyes have changed anyhow.
Catch is, I have no insurance whatsoever. So I need the absolute cheapest place to get my eyes checked and get glasses. I have astigmatism, it that changes anything.
I did check the "eye care" tag but the closest hit was from 2009, and I feel like plenty of places have likely changed in 3 years.
Anything in Davis, Arlington, or Cambridge is ideal.

My other question is, how much can I expect this to be? The last time I got glasses I was a teenager and on my parents' insurance, so I have no idea what a fair price even is...

Thanks in advance!

I need to get an updated prescription for my contacts. I looked at old posts, but the most recent ones tagged eye care are out of date; I was ready to take the recommendation for Dr. Smith at Lenscrafters or Dr. Littlejohn at ForEyes but both seem to no longer be at those practices.

I don't have vision insurance, so low price is pretty important. The reviews of Parelli and General Optical on Yelp both say that an eye exam with lens fitting is more than $150. I'd like to pay closer to $120 or less. I'm happy to travel by car or T. Where is your friendly, reasonably-priced eye doctor?
Thanks!

Time to get new eye exam and new contacts/glasses. Looking for a recomendation for an optomotrist in the Davis/Porter/Ball/Magoun area.

I've been using one in Central Square and have been satisfied, but am curious about closer options.

I need to get an eye exam and also a prescription for contact lenses (I wore them years ago but haven't recently). I've gone through the 'eye care' tag, and saw a lot of mixed or negative recommendations. Any strong positive reviews? I'm not considering Parelli because of the number of negative reviews associated with them and contact lenses.

My prescription sunglasses broke, so it's time to get the new glasses that I've been putting off and a new pair of regular frames too. I usually go to Lenscrafters, but was thinking of looking around a little. For those of you who wear glasses, where have you found the best selection and most helpful sales folks? Any recommendations in Cambridge/Somerville would be great, a little further afield is fine too. Thanks!

I see eye doctors every year or two, but I don't usually feel a strong personal attachment to them. Sometimes I go home thinking, "That was a disaster. I'm never going THERE again." More often I go home thinking, "Well, that probably wasn't more unpleasant than it needed to be." But when I change health insurance plans, it never bothers me if the last eye doctor I saw is not covered under the new plan.

My new HMO suggested some ophthalmologists in Arlington, North Cambridge, and Davis Square. (I'd rather not travel further, if I don't have to.) As most of them are in only 4 offices, I thought some of you might be able to tell me about your experiences with them. They are at:
366 Mass Ave (in Arlington, just east of the center)
281 Mass Ave (in Arlington, near Bates Road)
2285 Mass Ave (north Cambridge, near the bikeway crossing)
40 Holland St (Davis Square)

I'm looking for an ophthalmologist who is not pushy about getting fat patients to lose weight, or about trying to sell laser surgery to nearsighted patients. (I don't know if some doctors have forgotten how vulnerable a person feels with eyes dilated and some stranger's fingers on the eyelid, or if they're using that vulnerability on purpose.) If you've had visual field measurements, I'd like to know how they handled those. For routine eye exams, they just hold that little light in different places and ask if you can see it with your peripheral vision. But for diagnosing some kinds of neurological or retinal problems, they need to map the visual field in much more detail. There are different ways of doing it, and some are said to be less uncomfortable than others.

I generally buy my lenses on-line cuz it's cheaper, but need to update my prescription. Most of the previous discussion seems to focus on who has good product available (esp a good selection of glasses frames). I don't need that, just someone who will examine my eyes quickly and cheaply. I'm carless, so within 5 miles bike ride of Davis or on the Red Line is preferable. I went to Harvard Vanguard last time, but wasn't really impressed with either the service or the prices (of course, that was nearly two years ago, things may have changed).

Eye Care

I checked the tags and didn't see anything about Cambridge Eye Doctors.  I need my first eye exam and (most likely) first pair of glasses I didn't buy at CVS!  Cambridge Eye is running what sounds like a great deal with my insurance company.  Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with them?
Thanks.

I browsed the eye care recommendations here when I had an eye emergency last night and ended up at Parelli today thanks to the recs. (I'm going to buy my glasses elsewhere because theirs were pretty spendy, imo, but everybody there was nice.)

I've been wearing glasses since 3rd grade and contacts for 11 years. I've never heard that I have an astigmatism, but they told me today that I do and gave me a trial pair of special astigmatism contacts. (Unfortunately, those are the only vision aid I have until I go glasses shopping tomorrow.) I've never had any trouble seeing with the regular contacts, and these new ones are annoying the hell out of me, though it could just be that they're new.

Anyway, I don't know if it's possible or likely to misdiagnose an astigmatism, but I wanted to see if anyone's had something similar happen there (or anywhere). I told both the dr. and the contact lens tech that I'd never been told that before and saw fine, but they both laughed and said they hoped I hadn't been driving all these years, which, in hindsight, seems like kind of a bad response.

Also also, I'm planning to get glasses at For Eyes, but if anybody knows of a place that's having a free exam w/ glasses special, I'll go there instead and also get a second opinion (I have a car so transport's no problem). I'll probably call Parelli back on Monday, but I don't want to wear these bastards until I can get back there.

Hey guys, I checked and couldn't find anything recent in the 'insurance' and 'eye care' tags, so I decided to just post.

I desperately need an eye exam and new glasses, and I'd like to know if any place close to Davis (T or bus-accessible) takes Masshealth? Their site and robot voice on the 800-number was useless.

Thanks all in advance!

Does anyone have an eyeglass screwdriver? You know one of those tiny little things to tighten up the frame on glasses?

I went to put on my prescription sunglasses on the other day, and one of the lenses fell out. It still has the tiny screw there in place, but it looks like its a bit loose. I was able to put the lens back in place, but it is just a matter of time before it falls back out again.

If you have one, and I could borrow it for like 2 minutes, that would be awesome! I can meet you anytime in the Square or else at Joe Sent Me on Thursday if you are going to be at the meet-up.

Edit: Since I don't want to leave you all in suspense, CVS, $1.99 ($2.09 with tax).
