I need to get an updated prescription for my contacts. I looked at old posts, but the most recent ones tagged eye care are out of date; I was ready to take the recommendation for Dr. Smith at Lenscrafters or Dr. Littlejohn at ForEyes but both seem to no longer be at those practices.

I don't have vision insurance, so low price is pretty important. The reviews of Parelli and General Optical on Yelp both say that an eye exam with lens fitting is more than $150. I'd like to pay closer to $120 or less. I'm happy to travel by car or T. Where is your friendly, reasonably-priced eye doctor?
Thanks!

I received great customer service at Custom Eyes in Central Square when I went there for glasses. I just looked at a review on Yelp (a little over a year old) that said, "They are quite affordable - a complete contact lens exam without insurance is only $110. Dr Murphy is so amiable, and gives very thorough and clear explanations. She doesn't try to push you into more expensive products either - she gave me great information about cheaper contact options, and when I mentioned I wear slightly out-of-prescription glasses but couldn't afford an exam for those too, she didn't try to convince me otherwise. She gave a very comprehensive exam, with some little checks on aspects I'd never had done before." I don't know if the price is still the same, but it might be worth checking out.

Costco. You don't need to have a card to go to their optometrist, and you don't need to buy your glasses there to use their optometrist. Make sure to have them measure your pupil distance and then you can order your glasses online for cheap.

I go to the Pearle Vision in Twin City Plaza. The doctor is quick, efficient, and gets me out of there with a good product.

I can't speak as to cost, because I have insurance that covers it, so you might want to check with them on the price of a contact visit.

Harvard Vanguard in Davis was reasonably priced for contact exams the last time I used them. You can use your health insurance, often, for the eye health exam, and often eye doctors don't even take insurance for contact lens fitting exams.

The Pearle Vision in Government Center always charged around $100. It's more, obviously, if you order contacts through them. I just get the prescription and then order from the internet.

Check if your regular health insurance covers an annual eye exam. Many don't cover glasses or contacts but will cover the office visit for the optometrist.

I like Harvard Square Eye Care in Porter Square.
