Now that car insurance has changed in MA, has anyone done shopping around to see who offers the lowest rates for a car in Somerville?

I looked in the Insurance archive and anything about this was prior to the changeover.

I'm with liberty mutual right now, but want to save more money - if anyone has already done a lot of shopping around I'd love to hear about it.

Before I sold my car, I had switched from Amica to Progressive in May. Ended up saving roughly $400/year...and my coverage with Progressive was better.

The transition, however, was not all that smooth. I forgot which form it was, but after around a month of having the new insurance, I got a letter from the RMV saying that I had canceled my insurance, and they did not have proof of new insurance. All it took was having Progressive fax me the proper form.

Out of curiosity, did you ever file a claim with Progressive? I've had Amica for years and filing a claim was easy (at least, for a cracked windshield). Paying less would be good, but not if filing a claim is a hassle.

Never had to file a claim with Progressive. I agree that filing with Amica was easy (for glass, in my case).

I had Progressive when I lived in Maine and I've since switched it over to MA (about $400/year like [livejournal.com profile] mark0429). But while I lived in Maine, I was in a no-fault fender bender and the ease of claims filing with Progressive, and the speed and quality of the process, is one of the big reasons I've stuck with them.

Seconding Progressive. For our old, beat-up Toyota, it was the cheapest rate I could find (we also don't need much coverage, since it isn't worth much and has been paid off for years). I haven't filed a claim with them, but everything else about them seems easy to do, which is a good sign.

We'll assume you realized the default Progressive quotes are for 6 months of coverage, while most other companies' are for a year.

Progressive Direct is not sold through agents, who typically get about 15% of the premium. And I consider not having to deal my former stupid Commerce agent a big plus.

Did you ever have problems with Commerce? That's who I have - only ever had one claim, and it went fine.

In my experience, the one claim I filed went smoothly, although the Commerce person on the phone was a little fuzzy about explaining all the details of the process (essentially assumed that I knew what the heck to do, even though it was my first-ever claim). It was also clearly not my fault (rear-ended at a stop light, thank you cell phones!) so there wasn't a chance to mess it up with denials, IMHO.

I got a 6-month quote from Progressive that would mean about $500/year cheaper, but then I got a quote from Liberty Mutual that was $600/year cheaper, so I went with the latter. Liberty Mutual had more discounts, including a discount if you have an MBTA pass. The terms of the insurance were identical between both quotes, but I have no idea how they compare in terms of ease of filing a claim.

I had luck with Plymouth Rock Assurance- about $150 a year cheaper than others, and then a 7% WBUR member discount (they also have a 10% Mass Audubon discount if you are willing to go through one specific agent.) No idea how they are on claims. I had a bad claims experience with Commerce a few years back and dropped them.

This may be totally obvious, but can you get any discounts through your work/school? I get a decent discount w/ Liberty Mutual through my employer, and I'm sure there are similar other discount programs for different schools, employers, etc.
