Dentist and Renters

Good Morning Everyone,

I am in the market for a dentist in Davis Square. I have noticed there are so many dentist offices in and around Davis Square I cannot possibly choose. Anyone have any recommendations?

Also, something I have been meaning to do for a while (but feel myself suddenly pushed given the rash of break-ins in the area) is Renters Insurance. Any recommendations on that front?

Dr. Cooke at Davis Square Dental is right across the street from the T stop. I went to him after five thousand people on b0st0n recommended him, and I really like it.

Given the response for Dr. Cooke I have called. They are currently not taking new patients and are not scheduling new appointments clear out to January. I am however on a cancellation waiting list. So if you have an appointment---cancel. LOL Just kidding. :)

haha I was just going to say, I had an appointment scheduled for December that I needed to move, and wasn't able to schedule another one til the end of January! He's great, but damn.

Just because you are scheduled six months out, doesn't mean you won't be called and asked to come in earlier if there is a cancellation. It happens frequently for me.

I called them too a couple of weeks ago and got on their cancellation list. It only took about a week for them to call me and offer me a timeslot the following day.

Unfortunately I had already gone to another dentist where I got a next-day appointment on the first try. Dr. Shick at Somerville Dental Associates 617-776-5900. He was fast (my cleaning took 15 minutes) but seemed very competent.

I've found Dr. Shick really excellent and friendly, and I have high dentist standards. I'm willing to believe that Dr Cook deserves his fame, but I'm really quite happy to settle for someone as cool as Dr. Shick who can also see me on a few days notice.

i have amica renter's insurance. it was easy to get (did it over the phone) and not that expensive. haven't had to claim anything with them yet (thankfully), but they seem nice.

They are nice. I just moved to Somerville/Davis from Providence, and have dealt with Amica in RI since 2002. Never had to claim anything on the renter's insurance, but I've had several claims with the car insurance (ah, vandalism... and my own stupidity). They've been nothing but nice and helpful and prompt and smooth.

While you may have to wait for an appointment with Dr Cooke (and I recommend him highly as well), you shouldn't wait on renters insurance! A couple years ago I was "waiting" for my next paycheck to come in so I could get renter's insurance... I was just going to put it off for another week or two... then the first-floor tenants burned the house down. :( That whole mess is still in litigation.

When we got into our new place, we had renters insurance within two days. I went with Liberty Mutual, who I also use for auto insurance. My agent has been a dream to work with, and I can pass her contact info along to you if you like.

I know this community is very pro-Dr. Cook, but if you can't get in with him, I also recommend Dental Arts on Highland. I've seen Drs. Izedian and Mogaddam (sp?) and love them both.

given the rash of break-ins in the area

a group of people based a few blocks north of Davis have been working with the City for some months now to develop more community awareness of crime and safety issues. we’re meeting monthly; the original plan was to organize a Neighborhood Watch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhood_Watch), but it seems the City currently encourages a different sort of organization, about which we hope to be briefed at our next meeting.

If you live closer to Porter Square, I highly recommend Dr. Siemen. He's the dentist in the fire-engine-red house on Upland Rd (near the corner with Bruegger's Bagels and Gourmet Express). I chose him at first because he was really close to my apartment, and a big red house is awesome, but he really is a great dentist and the staff there is super friendly.
