same day glasses?

Hey, I broke my glasses frames yesterday, and am though my husband was able to repair them with superglue, I'm not confident in how long they will hold up.

I seem to recall that LensCrafters can make glasses on the same day you visit them (though I could be wrong), and am wondering a) if anybody can confirm this, and b) whether there are any local eyeglass places that provide the same service.

Yes, it is true. LensCrafters made my glasses on the same day. Takes about 4 hours, so you have to plan your time there, but it is, effectively, while you wait. They are, however, expensive. I would also look into Pearl Vision, and other local glasses vendors.

Online, Zenni Optical will make really really cheap glasses. We're talking $15-$20 for cheap frames and lenses, with high-index lenses if your perscription is strong enough to warrant it. Not a big sample size, but experience has been that the their cheap frames are acceptable and the lenses accurate.

At that price it is totally worth getting a set as a backup pair so that next time you don't need same day service.


That said, if you got your original glasses someplace you can go back to that is probably your best bet.

Not so much with the "same-day" though... If you need emergency replacement glasses, waiting for shipping might be a major issue...

Or you could pay for expedited shipping if your broken ones can last a little longer.

Zenni is great, I have like 5 glasses from them. Buying glasses in store must be the biggest markup.

I know that 241 Optical in Harvard Sq. does — a friend of mine had her own glasses emergency a couple of years ago, and I took her there. It took them a couple of hours I think. She got two pairs of glasses for about $200 I think.

In theory LensCrafters can do that, but in practice I've had that work sometimes, and other times they've said my prescription is too strong, they don't have anything in stock in the Boston area that'll fill it, and they'll have to overnight the lenses. So I'd call ahead.

If your lenses are OK and you only need new frames the issue is getting frames that fit the particular shape of your lenses; many shops have lots of frames in stock and can likely find a some that fit.

Interesting thought. Might not have worked so well with my old lenses, which were fit for half-hexagonal frames, but this is a basic idea that I really ought to keep in mind in general.

I had just this problem last Thursday, only I was attending a conference on the Las Vegas Strip. I got lucky and Lenscrafters was able to put my lenses in a new frame, but it was a ton of work finding someplace, especially without a car and a decent sense of the local geography.

The holes in frames into which the lenses are put have standardized sizes and shapes, so if the shop has a frame you like and it matches the size of the frame you have, they should be able to transfer the lenses in a matter of minutes.
