Beer Works withdraws application for Davis Square liquor license

I don't see something I can link to, but according to an e-mail that was just sent out by the Davis Action Group, Beer Works has withdrawn their city liquor license application. This was going to go before the licensing committee tonight.

My assumption would be that they were aware that they were not going to be granted a license and withdrew. So those who opposed the restaurant have succeeded. I have no idea if there is any link to recent issues with the building facade, but my understanding is that that should not have been a major issue since they had planned to replace it anyway.

A big question on my mind is whether or not Davis Square will now see ANY of the 8 remaining city wide liquor licenses. The argument used by Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz against Beer Works would seem to indicate that will not happen. The implication would be that you will see no new alcohol serving restaurants or bars in Davis Square unless they buy an existing license - so the total number of alcohol serving restaurants and bars will not increase in Davis Square anytime soon (without pressure on Alderman Gewirtz and the licensing commission).

Even if the licenses were for economic development only, opening a new business in a vacant building *in her ward* would seem to qualify. She's not really representing her constituents very well in this case. I find it hard to believe that the people who would prefer a hypothetical non-existent business to a real life business are really in the majority. It is too bad nobody ran against her.

No, she's representing her pearl clutching, "OH NO YOUNG PEOPLE!" constituents quite well. The kinds of people who whine that Davis is filling up with places for college kids to go to drink. Not like the old days, when it was a pleasant shithole filled with local businesses. She's also been very plain about not wanting any place in that space that she personally doesn't want to frequent.

Tl;dr, Rebekah Gewirtz is a spoiled little brat and one of the cancers that ruins this city.

Ha ha. Love seeing the "young people" here whining about not being able to get their drink on. It is endlessly entertaining, as are the NIMBY accusers. Keep it up, please.

This has absolutely nothing with people whining about "getting their drink on".

The Social Security building has been vacant for years. Beer Works and Flex Gym put together a very viable proposal that would rehab the building, give us an excellent pair of businesses, and provide a much, much better alternative to the Burger King/Subway/Massage Envy option. Ms Gewirtz even said so herself in the community meeting.

Sadly, a tiny minority of ignorant older residents seems to have invented their own reality and convinced her otherwise.

Don't troll.

More whining about "ignorant older residents" eh? Love it. Keep it up.

And FYI, I am a non-ignorant, younger resident who thinks that Davis Sq should not be allowed to turn into a strip of bars. When do we max out on bars, burrito places, froyo places, just because they want to move in here and get a piece of the action? How many bars is enough for the whiners who seem only to have beer glasses?

And yes, that building has been vacant a while and yes, it is a problem getting a good mix of businesses but it is worth trying to make that happen for the long term quality of life in Davis Sq.

So quit your whining (and your ignorant judgements about people who have different values and a different vision for this neighborhood).

Ok, I'll keep it up.

I was actually at the community meeting, and saw for myself that the only people voicing their discontent with the proposed plan were older residents who, consistently, proved themselves completely ignorant of what was being proposed. They were quite literally complaining about things that didn't exist, and even when their arguments were disproven, they continued to voice them.

I'm not saying that older people are ignorant. I'm saying that the specific people who voiced their disapproval were, literally, ignorant of what was being proposed.

Again, don't troll.

Sorry, but you don't appear to be a reliable source of information about whatever happened at that meeting given your comments about "ignorant older residents." I suspect that you were unable to hear, understand or appreciate their concerns, not that their concerns were unwarranted or "ignorant."

But keep whining. I enjoy it immensely.

Oh, I see, you're in the wrong place.

Davis Square Snark is over here (http://davis-snark.livejournal.com).

I recommend using the proper forum in the future to avoid confusion. Have a nice day!

Welcome to zoning meetings.
