State Rep. Carl Sciortino is resigning

effective April 4, in order to become executive director for the AIDS Action Committee.

I don't know if there will be a special election, or if the seat will just remain vacant for the remainder of 2014. Sciortino represents Somerville wards 4 and 7 and parts of Medford.

ETA: Somerville Journal says there will be no special election. We're just a few weeks away from the filing deadline for the November election.

Is it typical for Congresscritters to resign on such short notice? I mean, that's less than most people would give for a regular job. It seems kind of rude.
