State Rep. Carl Sciortino is resigning

effective April 4, in order to become executive director for the AIDS Action Committee.

Boston.com news story

I don't know if there will be a special election, or if the seat will just remain vacant for the remainder of 2014. Sciortino represents Somerville wards 4 and 7 and parts of Medford.

ETA: Somerville Journal says there will be no special election. We're just a few weeks away from the filing deadline for the November election.

Oh great. Now I'm gonna have to think when I cast my vote. For years its been "Is Carl still running? Yes? good."

Is it typical for Congresscritters to resign on such short notice? I mean, that's less than most people would give for a regular job. It seems kind of rude.

I know, but I kind of assumed that since the state legislature has a senate and all.. but I guess they don't use that term. Whatever, the question still applies. It seems rude to quit any job on such short notice barring an emergency, and this doesn't seem to be one. Especially a job where you ostensibly serve The People.

Well the People didn't vote him into the senate SO SCREW THEM :P

I doubt his vacant seat for such a short period will have any impact and this does happen rather often at the state level.
