Public transit-accessible animal shelters

I want to volunteer at an animal shelter or rescue and maybe eventually do some fostering. I live on the Medford/Somerville border and don't have access to a car. Any local recommendations?

Pets in Need is or was in Somerville itself (2 Bradley St. in Winter Hill), but their web site (as I write this at least) at animal-adoptions.org comes up blank. Here's some press coverage from late last year:

They're across the street from a stop for the 80 bus and not too far from various Broadway and Highland buses.

Pets in Need is still around: I just adopted a cat from them couple of weeks ago, although not from the Somerville location. I am a HUGE fan, and they are the shelter I have gone to for cat adoptions in the past as well. I know they were having trouble with their website, and it does seem to be completely down now (although it was working as recently as a week or two ago). They had a FB page too, but that also does not seem to be working. The woman that runs it is name Keri, and she can be reached at keri@[website URL listed above].

update on Pets in Need

I just got an email from Pets in Need with the update that is posted here: http://www.gofundme.com/helpgetmydreamback. And there is now a link to this page on the Pets in Need website. Now it makes sense why the website was down. :( I hope they can work through their issues, because I really like them.
