I want to volunteer at an animal shelter or rescue and maybe eventually do some fostering. I live on the Medford/Somerville border and don't have access to a car. Any local recommendations?

It's not exactly close, but I live in West Somerville and volunteer at Ellen Gifford Cat Shelter in Brighton. It's just a couple blocks away from the Boston College T stop. They're no kill, cageless and take a decent number of hard luck cases.

Pets in Need is or was in Somerville itself (2 Bradley St. in Winter Hill), but their web site (as I write this at least) at animal-adoptions.org comes up blank. Here's some press coverage from late last year:

They're across the street from a stop for the 80 bus and not too far from various Broadway and Highland buses.

Pets in Need is still around: I just adopted a cat from them couple of weeks ago, although not from the Somerville location. I am a HUGE fan, and they are the shelter I have gone to for cat adoptions in the past as well. I know they were having trouble with their website, and it does seem to be completely down now (although it was working as recently as a week or two ago). They had a FB page too, but that also does not seem to be working. The woman that runs it is name Keri, and she can be reached at keri@[website URL listed above].

I just got an email from Pets in Need with the update that is posted here: http://www.gofundme.com/helpgetmydreamback. And there is now a link to this page on the Pets in Need website. Now it makes sense why the website was down. :( I hope they can work through their issues, because I really like them.

This post reminds me I have two clean med/large size dog beds I've been meaning to find a good home for, preferably at an organization in need. In addition to volunteering, does anyone know of public transit accessible organizations that take donations?

The MSPCA in Jamaica Plain does. It's right on the 39 bus route, and near (though a bit of a walk from) the Heath Street stop on the green line E.

If you're interested in fostering, you can contact Black Cat Rescue: susanna@blackcatrescue.com.

Kitty Connection works out of a home in Medford behind the mall, so walkable from Medford Sq. They are always looking for foster homes since they don't have a shelter per se.

I just adopted a cat from Broken Tail Rescue, which has some cats in the PetSmart at Fresh Pond. It's all volunteer, I believe, and they have some cats fostered in homes as well, so you could start with a shift or two at the store and work your way up.
