New openings

Sugidama, a new Japanese place serving house-made soba and itzakaya-grilled meats, soft-opened next to Davis Square Family Practice late last week. They're open for lunch & dinner starting this week.

Not too far from Davis, the Winter Hill Brewing Company opened today, serving Counter Culture coffee in the mornings. Their evening brewery opens soonish.

Still to come, probably in this order: Opa Greek Yeeros, Davis Square Donuts and Bagels, and Oath Craft Pizza.

Winter Hill Brewing Company is about a 10-minute walk from my house. I've been awaiting their opening with bated breath! I'm more interested in the beer than in the coffee, though.

Oooh....I shall need to find a reason to walk to the bank or the post office and grab a coffee this week. Thanks for the heads-up. We really needed a coffee shop over heah on the Hill.

It sounds cool that they are going for a "morning cafe" feel also, in that general area there is not a whole lot for coffee - other than dunkin donuts of course

there's Ola Café, but it's down the hill in East Somerville. Is there anything in Magoun Square?

I guess I'm thinking between where the dunkin donuts on magrath is and where medford st hits broadway at Magoun square in general; and I'm not really sure of any coffeehouse/cafe there. Yes then there is Ball square but that is well past the general area now that is "Winter Hill"

I dropped by Winter Hill Brewing today. They had no pastries or other food yet to eat with their coffee, but they expect to have that starting tomorrow. Also, they told me they will have a "soft opening" for beer this Friday at 4 pm, with a public opening to follow Saturday at noon.

(I'm reluctant to make a top-level post about that until I see an official-looking announcement.)

You can get nice pastries and coffee in the Modelo place. It used to be more grocery, but now it's more coffee shop.

Yeah, I'm thinking of the other side of Peak Broadway from Magoun, where we haven't had much since that old Bickford's left.

Winter Hill Brewing's coffee side will be open 7am-1pm on weekdays, 8am-noon on weekends, according to the people I met there today. For the time being at least, they don't want to operate the coffee and beer sides simultaneously at all.

I ate at Sugidama last night and it was beyond wonderful. Everything was super fresh and my friend who lived in Japan many years was extremely happy.

Sugidama is good!

Went to Sugidama today. They don't have lunch specials yet so they're using their dinner menu with a discount. The miso is amazing — I ,mentioned that and was told it's made the old-fashioned way with bonito rather than from a mix.

Also, the staff is super, super friendly and obviously excited to be opening.

Actuall, there is a pre-soft opening tonight for people that donated to their kickstarter campaign.

They do now have a small selection of tasty pastries with the coffee, and did within a few days of opening.

We had a very happy-making lunch there today. Mostly from the yakitori section, plus a miso soup, fried octopus, and a fish cake soba soup. All VERY good. Also, we ate there with kids and they brought out the most adorable sushi-shaped molded lollipops - pink striped, with bumpy white rice-shaped bit on the back.
