What is it?

There's a house between Subway and Wing Zone on Elm that has a pole in the yard on which "May Peace Prevail on Earth" is carved in (at least three) different languages.

Is there a story behind that? Is it just decoration added by the owner, or is this a special place?

It's a peace pole. You can get them, or the parts to make them in any four languages here (http://www.worldpeace.org/peacepoles.html)

There's a Buddhist book publisher in that building. Wisdom Publishers, if I remember correctly. I bought an interesting book about Zen (Japanese) Buddhism there called Hardcore Zen which was written by an ex punk rock musician who used to hang out in Davis Square. The cover of the book features a grainy photo of the toilet in the Someday Cafe bathroom.

You should check it out sometime. The showroom area where you can browse the books is very smalll, but the folks who work there are quite friendly.
