recommendations for a holistic oriented GP?

Can anyone recommend a GP who is oriented towards a holistic practice and also takes insurance?

I have a GP now at Mt. Auburn Hospital. She's ok but is a bit quick to prescribe and tends towards being reactive/symptom oriented. Ex: recently I had my yearly physical and got a form letter from her with the standard stuff checked off @ test results. One thing - apparently my "bad" cholesterol is a bit higher than it should be and she had written a note to the effect that it was not yet in the range that should be treated by medication.

I thought - "ok, cool, I guess" but then I thought back to that note a day later and it occurred to me that since my cholesterol has always been in the low range, it might have made sense to ask some other questions- like if there have been changes in my diet, routines, etc. I imagine it's pretty tough practicing within the whole medical machine but I would kind of like to work with someone who is more proactive and holistic in outlook.

I don't know of any myself, but I'd suggest that you try to find a doctor who has "DO" after their name instead of "MD". Doctors who are Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine get the same training MDs do, but also have additional training in treating the patient as a whole.

Definitely-- I'm pretty sure that Mt. Auburn, like almost every hospital, has DOs hanging around along with their MDs. You could just ask someone there. DOs are very primary care/prevention oriented, and employ holistic techniques.

i have almost your exact same problem, & that's why i switched to the marino center. kari emsbo is the only provider currently accepting new patients, and that's who i see, she's great. she prescribes supplements, etc before cholesterol-lowering medication.
