meat and a haircut

A stranger recently told me about this place in Davis Square where you can purchase good meat for a reasonable price...not sure if it was a grocery store or a deli-type place that specialized in providing quality meat (ugh, this post is sexually suggestive), but I've forgotten the name. Any ideas what he might have been referring to?

Also: where's the best place in Davis Square (or just north, in the Powderhouse area) to get a good haircut for a reasonable price?

Thanks!

Well, McKinnon's has really cheap meat. It's a few doors down from Diesel. Inconvenient hours, though.

McKinnon's for meat.
The little place next to the UPS store for haircuts (assuming a barber shop floats your boat).

Salon Cu in Ball is pretty a-ok in my book. $20 for boys.

Yup, McKinnons

McKinnons is an actual butchershop. They have several butchers in the back cutting up meat most of the day, and if you come in early enough (generally not the hour before closing) you can talk to them about special orders and special cuts.

The meat is amazingly fresh, and very well priced. Sometimes you can get a better price at a warehouse club or grocery store special sale, but day in and day out, McKinnons is tops. They also have a deli counter with the cheapest cold cuts around, and a small vegetable selection. The bread and other prepared foods are pricey though.

In addition to the standards, McKinnons also carries unusual products. They usually have goat meat and whole rabbits in the freezer cases. And they'll usually have a few products marked way down that some distributor was trying to move.

If I recall correctly they are open way early in the morning - 6pm most nights. Until 7 pm on Thursdays, and 5pm Sundays. I might be off by a smidge.

You can go in there and buy a cart full of quality meat for Way Less than you would get at any of the Supermarkets. Plus if you want a 6lb roast and they only have 7lb or 5lb roasts out, ask them and they will cut you exactly what you want right then and there. When the cashier tells me my total, I am always amazed at how inexpensive it is.

Regular supermarkets like Star Market in Porter Square used to have good quality meat and a nice meat counter where you could actually talk to a butcher, but those days are long gone.

Yes--place smells funny but the meat is good quality.

oh god, yes. The idea that supermarkets are an excellent place to lay carpeting (are you listening FoodMaster in Inman Square?) is something that I have really never come to grips with. Anyway, this is the reason McKinnons stinks to high heaven- liquid food products, usually milk, inevitably get spilt and subsequently soaked into the carpet, left to fester for eternity. The resulting sour aroma permeates the whole store.

This, combined with the fact that it is impossible for two people to get into a checkout line without completely blocking all aisles, exits, and forcing the third person in line to stand in the adjoining room is the reason why I don't go to McKinnons. It drives me bonkers.

Supercuts on Mass Ave, across from the Funeral Home. They do a pretty good job there.

Meat: McKinnons.
Hair: Mario's (down the street, on the other side of Davis from McKinnons).

I second Mario's.

Hair International on Mass Ave. outside Davis charges $12 for short hair...I don't know what long hair costs.
