I just went to the Back Bay BSC during lunch and inquired about D. Square location. Here what I found out

Opening date got pushed due to elevator issues

They don't have a pool

and they are not 24 hrs..

So does anyone have an idea on when they will be opened? BB didn't give me a definate answer...

Thanks in advance.

When I joined the Central Square BSC last month they said it would be mid- to late-December. Some of their staff was moving over there whenever it opened, and that's what they were being told. Who knows if that's still accurate, though.

i was just wondering that myself. didn't you mention there were some davis square rules against being 24 hours or was that snark i mistakenly took seriously? :P

Store 18 is that way mainly because of the people who live in apartments above it. I don't know if there is in fact any general citywide rule. My guess is that CVS would not want to operate another 24-hour store this close to their existing one (at Porter Squre)

I could be wrong, but I don't think there's any 24-hour establishments in Somerville. Certainly not in Davis Square, anyway.

No 24-hour anything in Davis Square. The closest 24-hour establishment is Bread & Butter out on Mass. Ave, which is in Cambridge proper. Somerville always seems to find a reason to keep establishments open 24 hours. In order to hold the recent all-night Zombie Fest at the Somerville Theater, an "extended retail hours" permit had to be approved by a whole buncha people, from the police to the local aldermen, and of course a permit fee had to be paid. And even then, the theater had to lock the doors from midnight to 7:00 am; if you went out during that time, the theater was not allowed to let you back in.

WTF, paging WTF, white courtesy telephone, please.

That's "find a reason to keep establishments from staying open 24 hours", of course.

Did you ask about the "charter" membership rates?

[identity profile] jamiesquared.livejournal.com 2007-11-05 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ive been trying to find out what that means and I get nowhere. I emailed BSC two weeks ago and noone replied. I signed up for more info on their site and got nothing. I called another BSC and they gave me no info. Im coming to the conclusion BSC isnt very helpful.

I think I've signed up to receive info via their web site at least three times, because I kept forgetting I'd done it already seeing as how they don't actually send me anything. Grump.

Wellington BSC also opening soon

I was on the BSC website last week and noticed that they're also opening a much much larger club (50k sf vs 15k sf) near Wellington that does have a pool. Some of their memberships let you go to more than just your home club, so if you have a car, that might be something to consider.

It would sure be nice if they could take that fence down between the street and sidewalk. From across the street, you can hardly tell that CVS is open at all.

According to this article:

http://www.somervillema.gov/NewsDetail.cfm?instance_id=1110

"Final improvements to the facade and sports club are slated for completion this week, with exterior repairs to surrounding crosswalks and sidewalks to be completed in the spring."

I hope that doesn't mean they're keeping that green fence eyesore up until the Spring.

Tufts Daily article on BSC

I found this Tufts Daily article about the new BSC, published last week:
"We'll be starting to sell memberships next week and giving tours," said the gym's general manager, Pia Bertoney-Gross, adding that new members will be able to use the facility "probably another month after that."

Somerville doesn't allow 24 hour businesses.
But there is a gym (forget the name) in Twin City (Cambridge) that's open 24 hours.

3 dunkins/1 macdonalds

[identity profile] vonelftinhaus.livejournal.com 2007-11-05 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
OK I know that, there are 3 maybe 2, no there are 3, dunkin donuts in somerville that are 24 hours. Then there is the the MacDonalds in Twin city( I kno thats a weird situation); but I am sure those Dunkins are old Licenses

When I walked by the BSC entrance this morning, they were still painting the stairway's railings and walls.

Twin City is half Cambridge, half Somerville. I'm guessing that McDonald's is in Cambridge. I'm not aware of any Dunkin Donuts legitimately open 24 hours. I do recall, however, there was an issue a year or 2 ago when they found that the Magoun Square Dunkin was staying open 24 hours without a license. I don't know how that was reasolved. My understanding is that there are no 24 hour licenses in the city.
