Hi folks,

I was just made aware of an increase in the monthly membership fee at the Rockin' Fitness in Porter Square (used to be Planet Fitness). I only found out through my bank. It's gone from ten bucks/month to $14.99. They say they sent out notices about a month ago, but I never got one. Did anyone who's a member there get this notice? It's not that big an increase but I think they could have made it a lot more obvious. Say by putting signs up in the gym.

Just so y'all know.

Good day everyone! I am trying to get more fit and healthy. I've been running a while on top of eating well but it's not helping. I cannot afford a cardio machine so I was looking at the local gym options but the cost is outrageous. Even the YMCA is $41 a month. I looked at "rock in fitness" which has the best price of $10 a month like Planet Fitness but it seems like canceling a membership with them is a huge hassle from what I've been reading. I don't want a hassle come time to cancel.
I don't drive and am trying to avoid the extra cost of MBTA. Does anybody know of anything in. Somerville or Cambridge Porter area that doesn't cost an arm and a leg where I could use a few cardio machines?
Thanks in advance :D

According to the revised ZBA agenda for March 18, Crunch Fitness has withdrawn their application for a variance that was required for them to open in the old Social Security building: http://www.somervillema.gov/sites/default/files/agendas/ZBA3-18-15Revised.pdf

Although it isn't clear why they withdrew, I can't help but feel annoyed with the aldermen who have thrown up every ridiculous obstacle possible against businesses that don't have their personal favor from opening in that location.  We had a proposal for a restaurant and gym to go in that building put forward 18 months ago and here we are 18 months later with nothing but an eyesore and no sign of anything changing anytime soon.

If nothing changes by this Fall, here's hoping for an actual choice on the November ballot.

Hi Everyone,

Any news of Crunch or another gym opening in Davis Square this year? Thanks.

The proposed Crunch Fitness above the proposed Roche Bros in the old Social Security building on Elm St was supposed to be discussed at the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting on December 10.  It's on the agenda here: http://www.somervillema.gov/sites/default/files/agendas/zba-agenda-12-10-14-revised.pdf

I haven't heard anything about how this went, and I can't find any information online.  Does anyone know what the current status is?

The Zoning Board of Appeals were scheduled to hear this case tonight and vote on it, but the applicant asked that it be postponed until their next meeting on December 10.

If you support having Crunch Gym move into the second floor of 240 Elm Street, please send e-mail to zba@somervillema.gov . Be sure to include your full name and residential address. If possible, tell them that you will walk, bike, or take public transit to the gym (which means it will have no impact on traffic or parking in Davis Square.)

The Zoning Board of Appeals tonight unanimously approved Roche Bros' proposal for a Brothers Marketplace food store on the first floor of 240 Elm Street, which housed a Social Security office until 2010.

They didn't seem so happy with the proposed Crunch Gym on the second floor, raising questions about how much additional traffic and parking demand the gym would bring to Davis Square. They deferred action on this until their next meeting on November 19.

Hi All! My apologies if this post isn't in the right place. I feel like someone in the Davis or surrounding community could use this since it is a red line ride away.

I have a Healthworks transfer certificate to give away to the Porter Square location. This certificate will allow you to take over my membership and save the cost of paying a joining fee (around $119) for a month to month membership. I love Healthworks but am leaving to join a gym in the Boston area, a block away from my current job. I would be happy to answer any questions about the certificate. No need to meet in person to pick it up. I can leave it at the Porter Square Healthworks front desk for pick-up!

I know this is Porter, not Davis, so i'll understand if it gets moderated out of existence, but I was surprised to find out on Tuesday morning that my gym (Work Out World/Blast Fitness, which was Bally's, I think, under the Porter Sq. Exchange Building) is closing its doors on Friday. All our memberhsip stuff has been transferred to Rock'N, under the new Walgreens.

To be honest, as annoyed as I am by the short notice, I'm not complaining about the switch. I went to Rock'N and it was much much nicer than WOW was. New and clean and all the machines worked. And the transition really was seamless. All I had to do was zap my keychain card and figure out where the lockers were.

Just wanted to let anyone know so you don't show up next week and find the doors locked.

This Wednesday's Zoning Board of Appeals agenda (which was e-mailed to me, but which I can't find on the city website) has two items of interest in Davis Square:

American Bakers Inc. propose to establish an 18-seat bakery cafe in a vacant storefront at 22a College Avenue, the former location of Artifaktori.

Crunch has filed detailed plans for a gym in the former Social Security Building, to be located mostly on the second floor, but with a free-weights room at the back of the first floor. Dunkin Donuts would remain where it is now. The remainder of the first floor is labelled "Future Tenant".

I don't know if this plan is final, or still subject to possible revision (moving the whole gym to the first floor).

The ZBA meets Wednesday at 6 pm in the Aldermen's Chamber at City Hall.

If anyone here attended this meeting, could you report on it?

I have a feeling that there is coordinated opposition to CRUNCH! given the wording of the Davis Action Group e-mail regarding this meeting, and the fact that Alderman Gewirtz chose to attend this meeting instead of the BiBim meeting.

Given the drama involving what is now "Rock N' Fitness," I was hoping CRUNCH! might be able to serve as a viable alternative, especially since I have little faith that "Rock N' Fitness" will survive more than a year.

From what I gathered, the opposition centered around the fact that the gym will have no parking, there are already "enough" gyms in the area, and the belief that the business isn't viable because membership goals are too high.

Got a mailing from Blast Fitness (dba Work Out World?) listed as being at 1815 Mass Ave. Is anyone here a member and would care to comment on the place? Is it where Bally's is/was?

I'm a member of BSC in Davis but it is getting pricey so am looking around for a cheaper option. Don't care about classes, etc. I just use the cardio machines and the free weights.

If you're a member of the Planet Fitness in Porter Square, or if you were considering joining, you might want to take a look at this:

http://www.universalhub.com/2013/planet-fitness-takes-away-nitpickers-annoyance

The entity that owned the Porter Square/Government Center Planet Fitness franchise has left Planet Fitness and rebranded the two gyms to "Rock'n Fitness." They apparently did not notify customers of this until December 28 and are simply transferring the accounts to their own gym using a payment processor considered unsavory by some (ABC Financial). There is currently no website, social media presence, or any other information available about "Rock'n Fitness" outside of the uhub thread.

If you are a member of one of these two gyms, you will no longer be able to use other Planet Fitness locations as you are no longer a Planet Fitness member.

There are many complaints in the uhub comment thread, and someone who claims to be affiliated with "Rock'n Fitness" has been responding to many of them with insults (apparently they want to be the Amy's Baking Company of gyms).

I just took at "Crazy 8's" interval training class up at Soul.Train Fitness on Broadway in Teele Square, and it was awesome. They just got voted best gym in Somerville Scout (OK, that's probably a small sample, but still - I was really impressed).

It was also free. At the risk of being crowded out next week by everyone else, I figured I'd share the love and let people know they're having some specials for August:
Tuesday 6PM interval training: Free
Personal training: 10% off
Thursday night 7:15 yoga: 50% off  ($7 for drop-in classes instead of $14)
New clients, first 6:30 AM, Yoga, or Pilates class: Free

In times of higher apartment square-footages, I decided to buy a punching bag; now, in times of space scarcity, I'm looking to get rid of it. So, it'll be out on the curb for trash pickup on Tuesday morning unless someone gets in touch with me with a concrete plan to come get it (note: I live in Davis but don't have a car to help transport it). If more than one person is interested, I'll give it to the highest bidder, but I'm pessimistic about my ability to get any money for it. Please come get it, or the poor trash guy is going to hate me.

Hi everyone. As promised I wanted to mention my business that I am opening up at 862 Broadway (at Powder House Circle) , in the space that was previously Mass Metta Massage. My website can be found here.

More information below for those who would like it! )

I have a hearing coming up this Wednesday, November 7th with the ZBA for the change of use of my space from Medical Massage to Personal Training, as well as the often discussed Parking Waiver. The staff report is quite favorable, but if you'd like to stop by, I'd always appreciate the support. After that point, hopefully I can apply for my Certificate of Occupancy (at risk for 20 days) and have a grand opening at the beginning of December which I'd love to see you all at. I'm very excited to be opening my own business in the Somerville/Davis area, and look forward to hopefully having some of you as clients!

A few months ago, I grabbed a free treadmill posted here. After deciding that I use it enough to warrant the purchase of a treadmill better suited to the size of my apartment, I'm sending it back into circulation. It's a Proform 760 EKG folding electric treadmill. Livestrong reviews it here and the user manual can be found here. Anyone who wants it and is willing to lug it out of my first-floor (!) apartment, drop me a note with your email/phone and we'll set something up.

There is a new privately owned fitness studio in Teele called soul.train.
Short review under here! )

For all the good things I have to say, it's still rather expensive for this part-time working grad student ($14 for one class, $60 for 5, or $100 for 10, and I would happily go 3x/week if it were unlimited) so I also wanted to use this post to ask if anybody's been to the Zumba classes at the Work Out World on Boston Ave in Medford, which would be much cheaper for me in the long run, but they won't let me try a class before paying a $50 joining fee and committing to a $20/month membership. I am very picky about my Zumba classes, so I don't want to make that kind of commitment without knowing anything about them, and that's the only thing I'd need the gym membership for.

(Also, speaking of new things in Teele, there's a new consignment store there as well called Talya's Place. I haven't gone in yet but it looks cute!)

I have a package to outdoor bootcamp run by The Training Room this month but sadly hurt my leg and won't be able to go.  I can transfer it to someone else so if you want to purchase it from me let me know.  The class is sold out except for drop-ins which are more expensive so if you want to go every time here's you chance.  In case you've never been, the Training Room is awesome!  Check it out even if you don't make it to bootcamp!

Details:  Outdoor bootcamp (rain or shine) MWF 6-7 am at Conway Park on Somerville Ave. There are 10 classes left in the package with the last day June 1.   I paid 145 for 13, so I'm asking 110 for the remaining 10.

Greetings, all;

I am looking to start teaching a friend of mine historic or Renaissance fencing (think Three Musketeers or rapier and dagger fencing), but need a location within which to fence.  So I am searching for indoor spaces that can be used for this.  Our needs are:

1:  Indoor, on account of the weather
2:  High-ish ceilings, since our blades are up to 4' long and there are attacks that swing over the head
3:  Large, empty floor space (at least 14' x 15') with a smooth, rigid floor surface.
Wooden floors are ideal, since they have a bit of flex to them, rugs are not so good, but it depends more upon what is under them.  Concrete floors are bad, as in, makes it more likely to injure ones knees.
4:  Venue owner understands that we will be pursuing an athletic activity that is a martial art.
5:  The space is reasonably inexpensive.  Right now, there are only 2 of us.  It may grow to be as many as 4 or 5 in the future, but that is still a narrow base over which to share costs.
6:  Rooms to change into and out of athletic clothing.  Restrooms are ok.
7:  Both of us are local to Davis Square, and something close by would be nice.

I am already asking amongst the local fencing sallets, but have found their schedules to be very full already.  Also, we know about fencing in the SCA (we are refugees from their politics) and the Higgins Armory (too long of a drive for a week night, and their schedules on weekends is busy).  However, if anyone knows of any other solution, please let me know.  Thanks in advance.
