Shobu Aikido in Union Square is hosting a free week long Open Dojo event as part of Artweek Boston. It kicks off this coming Friday, September 25 with a demonstration and discussion at 7pm.

This will be followed by a week of free classes that members of the community (ages 15 and up) are invited to attend. No uniform is required, but we recommend workout clothing with short sleeves and pants that cover the knees.

The dojo is located at 34 Allen Street, Somerville. There is free parking both in front of the dojo and across the street, a safe place for bikes, and the dojo is also accessible by public transportation. Nearby bus routes include the 86, 87, 91, and CT2.

Class schedule is available on the website, but is as follows:

Saturday 10:00-11:30am
Sunday 9:30-10:30am sword class, 10:30am-12:30 regular class
Monday-Thursday, 6:30-8:00pm

Aikido is a martial art without competition. The harmonious and natural structure of aikido allows full contact and full speed training with very little risk of injury. The art of aikido unifies offense and defense and teaches the art of remaining neutral and balanced between the two. Based on the battlefield martial arts of Japan, aikido utilizes all methods of barehanded training as well as short staff and sword.

Hi all,
I'm happy to announce wing tsun kung fu classes just outside of Davis Square every Monday!

Mondays 7:15pm - 8:45pm
862 Broadway, Somerville (next to Tufts, a few minutes walk from the Davis Sq. T)
$20/class (1 hour 30 minutes)

Here's my pitch:
"Come train wing tsun kung fu and we’ll teach you a practical and efficient martial art that gets you in shape, builds self-confidence, relieves stress, and is fun and easy to learn.

Wing tsun kung fu was created in China by a Buddhist nun over 250 years ago as a means of defending herself from larger, stronger attackers. She knew that she would not be able to match their size or strength and instead developed a system that utilizes speed, technique, reflexes, and an economy of motion.

Wing tsun works for adults of all ages and all levels of conditioning. Whether you’ve been doing martial arts your whole life or you’re a beginner, wing tsun is easy to learn, safe, practical, and fun."

Your first class is free, so come check it out. I'm excited to get a wing tsun community off the ground in Davis Square. If you're interested, but have questions, feel free to email me at "WingTsunKen(at)gmail.com"

And for more information you can check out: SomervilleWingTsun.com

I've been trying to get my two older kids (aged five and three) into martial arts classes since summer, and I was wondering if anyone has a local place that they'd recommend. I'm interested in any place in the area that is good and teaches small kids, though I do have a preference for a place that is based in Chinese traditions as my MIL is offering to pay for "Kung Fu" lessons, and she is Chinese (and old enough to have bad memories of the Japanese occupation).

I know Davis Square Martial Arts would seem to be the ideal solution, but my kids have been on their waiting list since July. They recently offered me a spot for the three year old, but it was on a day I'd told them we could not make when I signed up for the waiting list. I have become frustrated, so I'm asking what other options in the area people might recommend.

In times of higher apartment square-footages, I decided to buy a punching bag; now, in times of space scarcity, I'm looking to get rid of it. So, it'll be out on the curb for trash pickup on Tuesday morning unless someone gets in touch with me with a concrete plan to come get it (note: I live in Davis but don't have a car to help transport it). If more than one person is interested, I'll give it to the highest bidder, but I'm pessimistic about my ability to get any money for it. Please come get it, or the poor trash guy is going to hate me.

Greetings, all;

I am looking to start teaching a friend of mine historic or Renaissance fencing (think Three Musketeers or rapier and dagger fencing), but need a location within which to fence.  So I am searching for indoor spaces that can be used for this.  Our needs are:

1:  Indoor, on account of the weather
2:  High-ish ceilings, since our blades are up to 4' long and there are attacks that swing over the head
3:  Large, empty floor space (at least 14' x 15') with a smooth, rigid floor surface.
Wooden floors are ideal, since they have a bit of flex to them, rugs are not so good, but it depends more upon what is under them.  Concrete floors are bad, as in, makes it more likely to injure ones knees.
4:  Venue owner understands that we will be pursuing an athletic activity that is a martial art.
5:  The space is reasonably inexpensive.  Right now, there are only 2 of us.  It may grow to be as many as 4 or 5 in the future, but that is still a narrow base over which to share costs.
6:  Rooms to change into and out of athletic clothing.  Restrooms are ok.
7:  Both of us are local to Davis Square, and something close by would be nice.

I am already asking amongst the local fencing sallets, but have found their schedules to be very full already.  Also, we know about fencing in the SCA (we are refugees from their politics) and the Higgins Armory (too long of a drive for a week night, and their schedules on weekends is busy).  However, if anyone knows of any other solution, please let me know.  Thanks in advance.

Thanks to all who responded to my original post about discounted Women’s Basics classes at IMPACT Boston. Several people who got in touch with me asked about our Men’s and LGBTQ self-defense classes, so now that they’re on the schedule I wanted to give you the scoop.

Scpheal about IMPACT behind the cut )

Men’s Basics will take place July 8th thru 10th in Malden.

Friday July 8th:    6p-10:00p
Saturday July 9th:    10a-7p
Sunday July 10:     11a-4p

Guys, I bet you’ve thought deeply about what is worth defending and how you might respond to confrontations of different kinds.  You’d be amazed at the variety of opinions and experiences you hear about when you have time to discuss it. The physical techniques are effective for anyone against any aggressor, and it’s fascinating to learn why. Moreover gaining physical skills while also having learned the patterns of escalation will assist your sense of assertiveness and overall confidence.

As always we offer scholarships (a name-your-own-price option) and no-interest payment plans.

LGBTQ men are welcome in the Men’s class, of course, but it looks like our LGBTQ class will be either the weekend of Sept 9-12 or Sept 16-18 and likely at
Fenway Health in Boston.  Send your contact info if you want me to let you know directly when it's finalized.

We’ll also have more
Women's Basics classes, once a month from now through Sept.

If you're interested (or want me to send you a scholarship application,) please email me at registration@impactboston.org, call 781-321-3900, visit
www.impactboston.org, or leave comments!

(will probably x-post to b0st0n)

To those of you on the Cambridge side of the square: I just noticed on the city website that Cambridge is offering free self-defense classes to its female residents and city employees for the next four Saturdays, 9am-noon. You have to call to reserve a spot.

Somervillains may want to campaign for their own version of this, it sounds great!

Hi All,

I'd like to offer a discounted a self-defense class to those who are interested!  If you want to feel safer and more assertive, now is definitely the time to act.

I work for a really fantastic non-profit in Malden called IMPACT Boston.  IMPACT provides realistic personal safety training that gives students the skills to respond appropriately to threatening situations.  IMPACT classes are designed to teach self-protection strategies that are effective regardless of size, age, or fitness level.

You may have heard of IMPACT by its former name "Model Mugging."  It's unique in that it provides a rare opportunity to practice self-defense using full force (one of the instructors wears a protective suit.)  I would add that  this makes it additionally interesting for people who have studied martial arts or attended other, less involved, self-defense programs, like RAD.

Our next class, Women's Basics, takes place May 13th through 15th.  Some people had to move to our June class, leaving the May class a bit under-populated.  I really don't want the class to be canceled, especially for the sake of those already enrolled!

I'm hoping for three more registrants for May.  We offer scholarships and no-interest payment plans, plus I'm sure we'll be able to offer a further discounts (possibly comps!)  just to run the program.  The schedule is as follows:

Friday May 13th 4:30p-9:30p
Saturday May 14th 10a-7p
Sunday May 15th 11a-4p

If it sounds like a huge commitment, I should tell you that a 56 year old woman who took the class in 2005 called me a few weeks ago to tell me that she recently used IMPACT skills to successfully fight off a would-be armed robber.  Once the skills are in your body, they are yours forever.

I could go on and on, but if you're interested, please email me at registration@impactboston.org, call 781-321-3900, visit www.impactboston.org.... or we can talk in comments!

(We'll have more Women's classes, a Men's class, and hopefully an LGBTQ class coming up too.)

P.S.- Feel free to moderate my tags, I am not adept in teh tagging arts.

Howdy,
I've been trying to decide which of the three Aikido dojos in Som'l to join. Near Davis includes:

I've observed classes at the NEAkikai and Tekkojuku, but am newb enough that I couldn't tell much difference. Folks at each place approached me to be welcoming and to tell me how much they liked their dojo. Prices are only slightly different. I also got the impression that NEAkikai considers itself top-of-the-heap.

I'm a total beginner, have never considered a martial art before, and am not seeking chest-thumping machismo. I wouldn't mind knowing a little boot to the head, but my priorities here are 1. not getting bored, 2. feeling supported, and 3. getting some exercise.

Wise DSLJ, care to chime in with Aikido recommendation/experience? Lyonesse? Others?

(This has been referenced in other DSLJ posts, but my request is Aikido-specific and 2011-focused. Boxing's cool, but not my thing. No jiu-jitsu, please. I already read that Oom Yung Doe is off-limits.)

Tai Chi

Hi everyone. I've recently moved to the vicinity of Davis Square from out of state, and I find myself lacking the local connections to discover which martial arts teachers are the good ones. My previous dojo taught Chinese-style kung fu, and as much as I enjoyed it, the practice was sometimes too demanding for my damaged joints. Now that I'm settling in, I'd like to take up tai chi in a more meditative atmosphere.

Who would you recommend, and where do they teach?

(I did read the archive, but the most recent post on this topic was dated Dec. 2003. :) )

I did some basic karate when I was a kid, and would like to get into it again. I know there are a lot of places that offer lessons in all sorts of marital arts, but I had a very bad experience with the one in Arlington Center.

To put it simply, I hate people yelling at me. Most martial arts teachers I've seen treat their students like a drill instructor chewing out new recruits, and I absolutely refuse to pay money to have someone scream at me.

Can anyone recommend a place to learn martial arts with polite, helpful instructors? I don't have much of a preference for the type of art, though I think Akido would be interesting. I am looking for some place on public transportation, preferably on the Red Line.

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hey there. I'm looking for a good place to take some Muay Thai classes. Different types of kickboxing or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu would be other good options. However, I'm basically working a summer job and trying to save money for going back to college in the Spring, so I am both fairly busy and frugal. It seems like I need to find a place where I could pay based on classes attended rather than needing to sign up for months at a time. Do any of you fine fellows know a place that meets this description?

I am thinking of dumping my gym membership that I do not use enough to justify and am thinking of getting involved in a martial art. I did Tae Kwon Do at a couple different schools many years ago and would like to try something different. I checked the "martial arts" tag and found some nice recommendations for martial arts schools however, they all seem to be $90+ a month plus some had a joining fee. Does anyone have a recommendation, any style, that is closer to $30-$50 a month? I have a car so I am not limited to T access but would like to try to have it reasonably close to where I live (Medford). Am I fated to be disappointed? Thanks

Has anybody checked out this place on Broadway, across the street from Lyndell's?

My wife and I are thinking about learning how to fight off bad guys a few days a week after work. Can anyone recommend or share experiences with their karate/kung fu/jiujitsu/judo/capoeira/etc. school preferably somewhere in between Union and Davis? Sorry so vague, we don't have much to go on. We don't want anywhere cultish or overly spiritual.

On the same topic, we saw some pictures online from various schools where everyone is sharing sweaty foot juice. Is it pretty common to go barefoot? Is it a requirement? :-)

Thanks in advance!
