Good day everyone! I am trying to get more fit and healthy. I've been running a while on top of eating well but it's not helping. I cannot afford a cardio machine so I was looking at the local gym options but the cost is outrageous. Even the YMCA is $41 a month. I looked at "rock in fitness" which has the best price of $10 a month like Planet Fitness but it seems like canceling a membership with them is a huge hassle from what I've been reading. I don't want a hassle come time to cancel.
I don't drive and am trying to avoid the extra cost of MBTA. Does anybody know of anything in. Somerville or Cambridge Porter area that doesn't cost an arm and a leg where I could use a few cardio machines?
Thanks in advance :D

The Boston Sports Club in Davis Square is very nice and has a $25/month rate. They also have a sauna (which was a godsend after shoveling this winter!) and there are lots of free classes in zumba, yoga, etc.

Also, they have ellipticals.

I also see free ellipticals on craigslist a lot.

I was gonna say this, assuming you do want to be in a month to month arrangement and even if you got a free elliptical you don't have a place for it.

Is this the only fee you pay? Because on their website, it looks like there's a $50 yearly fee on TOP of the monthly fee, a $30 cancellation fee (even though it's listed as being month to month) and a $100 joining fee. At minimum, you'd be paying almost $400 for the first year alone, and you can get yourself a really nice elliptical for that amount (hell, you can get a decent one for less than than $170 you have to plot down on joining). Or can you get a better deal than the one on the website if you go in personally?

I've gone to Planet Fitness before and did not have trouble at leaving time. I'm at Rock'n'Fitness now, and highly recommend it. Plenty of ellipticals.

I think some of the fuss over Rockn Fitness got a little blown out of proportion. I had no problem terminating my membership. My wife was at a different gym that also used the same billing service, and she had no problem terminating her membership there either.

I'm not a huge fan of RF, but I never had a bad experience there, and always found the staff professional, friendly and courteous.

If all you want to do is use an elliptical, I think RF would be a pretty good fit for you.

if you like swimming at all, the community pool in the Kennedy school is wonderful. I can't remember how much it costs -- I feel like it was something like three dollars a pop for Somerville residents, and five dollars for non-Somerville residents, and they do monthly passes as well. And it's quite a nice pool.

the YMCA actually does promise sliding scale based on financial need, so it might be worth calling them and asking.

if you have any affiliation with any of the local colleges, a lot of them have gym membership policies for staff and alumni. I'm assuming you don't, or you would have mentioned it, but most of them have pretty good facilities so I figured it was worth mentioning. There are other affiliations that get discounts at local gyms -- being a municipal employee usually does, for example.

There's a bunch around Boston and in other places listed at http://www.wickedcheapboston.com/bostons-cheapest-gym-memberships/ which I found when I was looking for that thing about the YMCA and the discounts.

BSC does have a ton of extra fees. I looked into it recently.

I'm selling a used elliptical, if you have a place to keep one! I need it gone, flexible on the price. http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/spo/5025465267.html

Everyone I've known who has gone to Workout World has had good things to say about it. It's in Medford, however,
