if you like swimming at all, the community pool in the Kennedy school is wonderful. I can't remember how much it costs -- I feel like it was something like three dollars a pop for Somerville residents, and five dollars for non-Somerville residents, and they do monthly passes as well. And it's quite a nice pool.
the YMCA actually does promise sliding scale based on financial need, so it might be worth calling them and asking.
if you have any affiliation with any of the local colleges, a lot of them have gym membership policies for staff and alumni. I'm assuming you don't, or you would have mentioned it, but most of them have pretty good facilities so I figured it was worth mentioning. There are other affiliations that get discounts at local gyms -- being a municipal employee usually does, for example.
