possible attempted bike theft

Just a note that last night around 12:15 there was someone breaking a bike lock with a brick along the side of the Davis T stop (the wall facing the Theater/Ice Cream window). A passerby and I made eye contact and processed this activity....the suspect then noticed our attention and took off in the direction of the bike path, away from Holland Street. He didn't seem to have anything with him as he ran.

The passerby I was standing with did call the police and give a description of the person. He also looked at the bike and said it was a really expensive bike, and it appears to have actaully been damaged a bit from the banging, etc.

I just wanted to let people know this happened. It's too bad. I hope that something good came from the call to the police.

As a reminder to everyone who rides, please make certain that you (a) have your bike's serial number written down, (b) are locking your bike in plain sight, and (c) are using BOTH a quality mini-U lock and a quality cable lock when securing it.

As a bike owner (and I expect on behalf of many other bike owners), I love you. Smooches!

You rock for stopping like that. I work at a bike shop and am always sad when people tell us of their bikes being stolen.

U locks are the way to go, along with having the serial number and renters/home owners ins.

Do U locks really work? Or do they just make it more difficult than other kinds of locks?

As an aside, I used to live right near the somerville theater and the T stop on that side and I can't tell you how many times i've seen attempted bike thefts and called the cops, one time their was a cop just a block away and I alerted him...I swear some of the people stealing those bikes don't seem to care at all about being caught, they just do it right out in the open.

They're more difficult to break than other kinds of locks. Here is an ok article for those curious about locking up a bike. I say ok, because I think some of it is sorta ridiculous.

It seems like that area is a hot spot for theft, what are the police doing to prevent it?

As others have said. Thanks for noticing, scaring off the guy, and calling the cops!

Another biker girl says thank you!
