Dancin' Fool and etc

Greetings,

Looking for recommendations for the most-fun 80s night in the Boston area; I've heard Manray is alright on Saturday nights, but have not actually experienced it. Does anybody know what the vibe is like?

I don't have a vehicle so am looking for somewhere on this side of the river. Other places I've heard of are Axis' "Lushlife" on Saturday nights, and "Love Night" somewhere in Allston....

So far, Mayray seems to be the top pick, but I would much prefer an underground/smaller/local club.

On a different note: (no pun intended)
Looking to purchase a digital or acoustic piano, can anyone recommend a piano shop within 10 miles that have a decent selection of keys that I could try out? Most acoustic shops don't have a great selection of digitals, and places like Guitar Center normally don't carry the particular digital that I'm looking to test (Yamaha YDP223). As an alternative, there there practice rooms for rent in the area?

Thanks everyone!

Manray is an underground club, and they do have very good music on Saturday nights.

I haven't checked out Axis's Lush Life, but I would like to.

THe Cruxshadows are coming back to Manray on September 15th :) Yes, Rogue is their [hot] singer - I first saw them in '97 and I've been a fan ever since - probably because they remind me so much of a certain 80's band I was enamoured with - Information Society.

The practice rooms at Tufts tend to be unlocked and unoccupied, and there's no one around to check ID...(Guess they figure piano theft isn't a really major problem.) They're in...uh...basement of Aidekman, IIRC.

This could possibly be the best news I've heard all year. I've been looking for a place to play piano without annoying the shit out of employees/caretakers/whatever (such as one might find at, say, the Steinway showroom or the Boston Organ & Piano Whatever-It's-Called)

I had a ton of fun at the Phoenix Landing in Central Square a couple of Saturdays ago. I also hear Manray is great. PL is def. more mainstream (80s, one-hit wonders).

If you're in Allston, try the Common Ground on Harvard Ave. I was there one night when they had this killer DJ playing all sorts of fun new wave.

Love Night is fantastic! It's Thursday nights at the Common Ground, and possibly the only place in the city where you can dance to the Pixies & the Smiths (though I've heard good things about The Pill as well, but have never been).

It's Sat. nights, but I think it's at the Paradise.

Manray is pretty cool. It's all new wave, not so much 80s "pop". There's a semi-mixed crowd - last time I was there I actually saw a handful of people who had to be at least 40 - and no one seems to mind anyone else, so it's easy to fall in nicely. It's fun all night, but it really starts filling up around midnight. The mix of music is good and the 80s night is not cheesy at all. You should go check it out at least once. Have fun!

New Wave City (http://www.newwavecity.com/) in San Francisco is excellent, but tough to drive back from after last call.

I agree with the Manray votes. Good music, good crowd, and more convenient to Somerville than Lansdowne St. I'm glad you asked, though, Phoenix Landing and Love Night do sound worth checking out.
