Urban Planning gone wrong

While we are on the topic of community development, does anyone have an explanation for there now being a third convenience store in Teele Square within view of the other two?

Beyond the fact that I don't feel like these stores contribute much (if anything) to the community, I'm kind of wondering how it is that this neighborhood can even support three of them (four if you count the Indian market down the street that sells pretty much all the same stuff).

I don't mean to be such a community troll about these things, but I live in that neighborhood and it is starting to get a little depressing...

While I obviously like bicycle stores, Somerville and Cambridge together are blessed with quite a large number of them already. The newest is Open Bicycle in Union Square. The closest to Teele is probably Paramount Bicycle in Ball Square (used to be in Powderhouse).

It's from Movie The Demolition Man. I know, I had to ask, too.

Wasn't that actually a pizza place a long time before something happened and it was damaged/rendered unusable? I think that was the pizzeria that was there before coming back..

I thought it was a Chinese restaurant before?

That model certainly works for dunkin' donuts. How many neighborhoods in MA have we seen with two Dunks - one across the street from the other? And they still always have lines out the door in the a.m.

I remember seeing a comment about there being a fire there, or something else previously, and that it had been a pizza place. I looked back a ways in restaurant tags and tried the search tool (hah) but couldn't find the entry. I might be misremembering..

And I could be wrong, or there could have been more than one fire on that part of Broadway. I don't get up there very often.

Do you mean I'm guilty of TMI for posting that link? I SO don't get geek humor. :-)

That's because anyone who has ever tried to take a left into or out of a Dunkin Donuts knows what a HUGE pain in the ass it is.

OHEMGEE!!

Me too!!!!! Oh how i miss their Almond Milk Bubble Tea! And the Green Apple! And their unreliable hours!

Hey, how much do you know about running a tea shop? Wanna go into business together? :P

Times like this make me wish i hadn't majored in painting and instead had gotten my B.A. in Gelatinous Foodstuffs Management. *sigh*

I thought it was another Real Estate place...

That's what I remembered from a few years ago.

There was a fire a couple of years back, but before that, the place where Guru is now was a Chinese restaurant (Szechuan Garden, I think? Before that it was Sesame, sister of Wang's in Magoun) and the corner where Marino's is was a coffeeshop, Pete's I think? They sometimes had a sign that said "Last coffee before Rt 16/2!"

[identity profile] sparkgrrl658.livejournal.com 2009-06-01 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
well yes, but tons of people want coffee in the morning, and tons of people like dunkin donuts.

i don't see everyone lining up for beef jerky and cigarettes.

Teele Square Convenience is also an Indian grocery and has a range of selection that can only be described as absurd. They fit a lot of stuff in there, and in an area with a much smaller footprint than Neighborhood.

Also, I'd rather have convenience stores than empty storefronts.

If Teele Square is a destination now, it's because of Rudy's.

I live in Teele too and I have to agree that a 3rd of these stores is overkill...why can't we get a coffee shop that is open for hanging out, wifi, reading etc.

Also the place next to PJ's is vacant again (Holland St Cafe in it's last incarnation)but they painted over the sign so I think something is going in. I keep wanting something to succeed, but it seems like whomever keeps going in there has little to no business sense.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2009-06-01 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What?! Didn't they just reopen a few weeks ago??

If that was their name, maybe the sign should have been "Not to be confused with Peets"

They changed their name to Wicked Coffee or something like that a few months before the fire. The people who ran it were SO nice too and I think they just disappeared from this area :(

The hair salon was there too but I think that moved down?

Because we've got three of those less than a half a mile away, possibly?
