sweet chili, a three-fer

has anyone had the green papaya salad at sweet chili? i'm curious to try it. i've never had it so i didn't want to order it from a place that might be Doing It Wrong.

i ordered take out from them last night (i needed so satiate a pad thai craving - not the best i've had but did the trick!) and a random memory popped into my head about the green papaya salad. i actually found the post, but it turns out that commenter was talking about a restaurant, not the dish.

also, they gave me a small (sauce-sized) container of a creamy substance with tapioca in it, a very pale greenish hue, with some yellow bits. it was sweet, and enjoyable, until the yellow bits which i thought might be mango turned out to be corn. wondering if this is some dessert/palate cleanser type thing and/or if it got in my bag by accident.

the yelp reviews didn't come up with anything, and i've long hated the fact that foodler does not give you any option to expand upon why you liked or didn't like a dish which makes their rating system pretty much useless.

somewhat related: mods, what is the difference between the 'dining' an 'restaurant' tags?

[by the way, the octopus appetizer special for sit down? don't be expecting calamari or sushi.]

Sugar and Spice gives you a little dessert cup with corn in it; I think it's great. No one else at my place ever wants to eat it.

I haven't had papaya salad form the place you are asking about, but I do not like the one at Sugar and Spice.

I have never had a green papaya salad that was bad :) just sayin' (I get this almost every time I'm at a restaurant that has it). I haven't had it at Sugar and Spice, but I only ate there once and vowed never to go again since everything we ordered was awful or mediocre.

Tamarind House on Mass Ave has a pretty decent one. 9 Tastes in Harvard had a really great one (though spicier than usual).

I want nothing to do with this creamed corn pudding.

noooooo...think more like crab apples. tart and crisp. At least I assume that comes from the green papaya :)

spice n rice > sugar and spice

No, the tart comes from lime juice. Plain green papaya is extremely bland, and sometimes slightly bitter tasting.

Closer to jicama than water chestnut. But yeah, bland crunchy. And firmer in texture than those aforementioned bland crunchy things. I think it's hard to get a downright awful som tum because it's usually considered "real" Thai food and not an invitation to make things Americanized in flavor (soupy, sweet and bland).

We also received those tapioca cup thingies, and I believe it was when we got takeout from spice-n-rice. And we too were surprised by the pieces of corn. But we eventually concluded that it was a complimentary dessert (i.e., we hadn't ordered it) and that it was very yummy if you pushed the corn kernels aside. ;)

I still remember the first time I ordered from Sugar and Spice, and the conversation I had with my sister about what was in that little cup. Whatever they call that little complementary dessert, I enjoy it, corn and all!

I've never had their green papaya salad, but now I want to try it. This post reminds me of the green mango salad at YoMa in Allston. Hands down, one of my favorite salads anywhere.
