Save our MBTA service! Public hearing and protest Tuesday 2/28 at Somerville High School

The MBTA wants to drastically cut service and increase fares on July 1. They are holding a public hearing this Tuesday at Somerville High School from 6 to 8 pm. A protest rally outside the high school will precede the hearing, starting at 5 pm.

Please come to the hearing and tell the MBTA that it is not acceptable to cut:
- Somerville bus routes 80, 85, 90, 92, 95, and 96
- many other bus routes in Cambridge, Medford, and other cities and towns
- ALL weekend service on the Green Line "E" branch
- ALL weekend commuter rail service
- ALL weekday commuter rail service after 10 pm

With these cuts, there will be: no way to reach the Assembly Square Mall or Burlington Mall at all; no way to take weekend daytrips beyond the inner suburbs; no weekend service to the Museum of Fine Arts, Gardner Museum, and much of the Longwood Medical Area; and no way for Somerville residents to reach weekend jobs in the suburbs (or suburban residents to reach weekend jobs in Somerville).

Here's a leaflet you can print out and post at your nearby bus stops.

If you can't make Tuesday's hearing, the T is holding another one Wednesday, February 29 from 6-8 pm at Cambridge City Hall.

DSLExtreme - any experience or opinions?

At the beginning of this month, Newton-based Galaxy Internet Services stopped providing residential DSL Internet service, and turned all of its customers (including me) over to a non-local company, DSLExtreme.

Do any of you have experience with or knowledge about this company?

Still looking for participants: Psych Study @ Tufts

Hi All,
I received a really great response last week when I posted this study, and I'm still looking for more people, so thought I'd try again!

As part of my senior honors thesis in the department of Psychology at Tufts, I am conducting a study examining exercise and mood in females ages 40-60 years old. The study takes about 1 hour, takes place on the Tufts campus (near the Medford/Somerville line, about 15 min. walk from the heart of Davis), and pays $10/hour.
Participants need not be affiliated with Tufts, but this is an especially convenient opportunity for those who work at Tufts or live in the area (i.e. Davis Square!)

I am flexible with scheduling throughout the week (including lunchtime and afterwork). Weekend scheduling is also a possibility. The study will continue for at least the next 2 weeks.
Please contact me at tuftsexercise@gmail.com if you are interested in participating. Feel free to pass along the info to anyone who may be interested (female, 40-60 years old).

Thanks,
Lauren

random act of hate on elm st

I've lived in this neighborhood for ten years and there have been very few incidents in which I feel unsafe.  Unfortunately I have an incident that just happened to me to add to the list.  It's random but I just want to give people the heads up.

I was crossing Elm at Willow this evening and was slightly in the crosswalk as the last car was going by.  It was filled with guys (late teens or early twenties) and as it passed someone yelled "faggot" and threw an open cup of soda really hard into my stomach.  Not only did it get soda all over me but it also hurt.  And they were gone too fast for me to get the license plate number so no real sense calling the cops.

I'm actually a gay woman with short hair and I'm not sure if they just couldn't see me well and mistook me for a man or if they have their gay terms confused.  Regardless, this was definitely a gay bash incident.

Has anyone else in the Davis square area had a similar experience? I mean gay bash, not being thrown in the gut with an object although I'm curious about how common that is too.  Maybe I've just been lucky that it's never happened to me here before?
