Another random question: non owner car insurance?

Hello DSLJ,

The hubby and I have been using zipcar for 8 years now, with much success, but we're finding we fairly regularly also rent from enterprise for the weekends (usually when they do their $10/day sales during the winter). Adding their insurance coverage often more than doubles the cost of the rental. We rent under our credit card that offers some rental coverage, but have been wondering if we should explore getting something like non owner car insurance. I've read that it exists, but the brief search we have done has turned up no leads in MA. We called our homeowners insurance company (Amica) and they don't offer it. I can definitely call around to companies that insure in MA (and eventually will), but I'm wondering if anyone in Davis actually has it or had it, and can recommend a company that will offer it?

Thanks!

Try Anderson insurance on Highland ave, believe they are commerce insurance. They always were very helpful with me

I highly recommend Nancy Bender Insurance on Milk Street (downtown Boston where all the train lines merge...) for all weird questions :)

I have USAA, which is military and family of. So far, I have never had to use my non-owner driver's insurance, which I am very happy about!

Sorry this isn't actually more helpful.

You should clarify what coverage the credit care offers and if includes both collision (damage to the vehicle you are renting) and liability, then you are all set unless the non owner coverage is cheap. Once I used my credit card's coverage when I damaged a vehicle I rented and it worked! Visa paid for the 900 damage I caused. Now I own a car so I don't remember if liability was also covered.

It varies state-by-state, but basic liability coverage is often required to be included as a part of the rental.

I've also had Visa pay several damage claims (I rent cars a lot), and they've always been great to deal with. Sometimes the car rental companies were a little bit annoying, but mostly just getting them pointed at each other has been all it took.

Yeah, definitely, you need to talk to an agent, not an insurance company. Companies have specialities of various sorts, whereas agents know which company sells what types of insurance. Of course, the agent will be eager to sell you something, so you need to get the agent to explain exactly what you need and why before you buy anything.
