I need to rent a car from the 2nd to the 5th of july in/around somerville (just to sightsee in). Does anyone have an agency theyd recommend? Thanks.

And while Im at it, any really great sightseeing suggestions, or a good Mass beach?

Crane's Beach in Ipswich is pretty nice and worth the extra drive out there. There's a fee for parking though.

I'm reluctant to recommend anyone drive in Ipswich right now, with almost all their bridges damaged and closed due to earlier flooding. Keep an eye on http://www.town.ipswich.ma.us/weblog if you do go there.

I think that you see more walking around than you do driving. That's just my 2c, though.

Ah, see when you said "in/around Somerville" I didn't take that to mean "beach or sites fare away."

Because for sightseeing, car is not usually the best choice, since usually all you see in a car is...well, other cars.

I know of people who had good experience with Enterprise Rent a car, which is right on Elm.

I've been very happy with Enterprise.

I like Enterprise a lot. They're the cheapest and they have great service.

Depends on how far you want to go for a beach, but race point out on cape cod has just miles and miles of white sandy beach and public parking!

And you can get there by high-speed ferry from downtown Boston -- no need for a car.

I have had good experiences with Enterprise, and they tend to be cheaper than most other places, IME.

For beaches...many of the ocean beaches are very pricey to park. Crane's is supposed to be nice, as is Wingaersheek (http://www.bostoncentral.com/activities/wingaersheek_beach/p668.php). For fresh water, Walden used to be nice, but last I heard is flooded, so no more beach. Sandy Beach in Winchester seemed nice, but we tried to go a week or so ago and it was contaminated. We had a blast at Houghton's Pond in Milton, but it's pretty...sedate. :)

The de Cordova in Lincoln is neat. And Habitat in Belmont has pretty nature.

It's hard for me to think of other ideas, though, since "car" really suggests "not in Boston" but "sightseeing" suggests "in Boston"...

Some of the small cities and towns near Boston are fun to wander around -- Lexington, Concord, Salem (both witch stuff and maritime history), Marblehead, Gloucester, Rockport, Newburyport. Normally I'd include Ipswich on the list, but it's a mess right now with almost all the bridges closed. Lowell has industrial history which may or may not appeal to you and your friends.

Sightseeing

I like to take company to Mt. Auburn Cemetery. I know it sounds a little bit odd, but it is absolutely beautiful. Not only is it American's First Garden Cemetery, but it is also a National Historic Landmark. There is also a tower that when climbed offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding area. If you go, be sure to stop in the visitor center to pick up a cemetery map that includes the location of graves/memorials of noted persons like Winslow Homer and Buckminster Fuller, and/or pick up a map of the all the "big trees" of Mt. Auburn.

If you want to find out more, check out their website: http://www.mountauburn.org/

A similar place, on the other side of the river, is Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain. Which is a short walk from another place of great beauty, the Arnold Arboretum. Walk a little further and you get to Jamaica Pond.

(Don't drive there. Take the Orange Line and then walk.)

I made this Platial map of places to go swimming around Boston

http://www.platial.com/tracy_the_astonishing/map/7166

I made it for me and my friends, but there's no reason not to share! Also, if you know of a good spot that I din't get on the map, please just add it on there!

You can drive out to Mass MoCA (http://www.massmoca.org/). Super place.
