Chipolte? Where Halloween Scream used to be...

Do we really need more burrito's and taco's? Couldn't something more fun and maybe useful have bought that space?
now I wont be able to get last minute halloween stuff....

The whole "do we need...couldn't something else" line of thinking annoys me. "We", in the broader community sense, can't make a business appear. At best, "we" have ways of opposing businesses we actively don't want, but only the people creating businesses can actively make something happen. I see this in neighborhood meetings and the like - "Why can't we have a grocery store there?" Well, maybe because nobody's trying to open one.

Sure, but if somebody's looking to open a grocery store somewhere in the area and is doing some research, it might be helpful for them to hear that lots of people in a particular community are grousing about not having one. Not that that should be the sole decision-making factor, but it's certainly relevant.

Anyway, it's fun! Every so often my friends and I do the "What would be Your Perfect Davis Square" -- all our favorite kinds of stores & restaurants we'd want if we could design it ourselves, so that we'd never have to leave again. Mine would have a hardware store and a few more used/independant bookstores, among other things (which wouldn't hurt M&M, when you have enough bookstores in the same area, it becomes a book-shopping destination). And maybe also a paint-your-own-pottery place! And a Trader Joe's! :-P

Oh, yeah, and in my perfect Davis Square, Halloween Scream would be a permanent installation! But I admit, I'm not expecting business developers to make their plans based on market research that features me as their sole demographic. Unfortunately.

I agree about more indy bookstores, but sadly, it's a dying genre thanks to Amazon. Just look at what happened to Harvard Sq. When I was younger, there were something like 27 bookstores there, but now.....

I'd love to see another live music venue, something that catered more to harder/local rock. But again, that's one of those businesses where it is extremely difficult to make money, especially with the new fire codes.

If I recall correctly, Trader Joe's didn't want the One Davis Square location due to lack of parking. So maybe once CVS opens and eventually puts Brooks/Rite-Aid out of business, Trader Joe's can open in that location.

Any ideas on when Shino will open? I don't go down Highland much, but last time I was there they were doing a lot of work inside the building. Also, did anything get solved about the old sign there? I heard some people wanted it to go to the Somerville Museum.

Except isn't the lot next to Brooks a metered lot? I wonder if they would make a difference. Plus, there's not much parking there anyway.

That being said, I would die of happiness if they moved to this area. I've actually made a comment to that effect on their website a few times :).

I like Trader Joe's too, but when people wish for one in Davis, I always point out that folks usually complain about chains moving in and small businesses being pushed out of the square in the same sentence as 'I wish there was a Trader Joe's' - and that if TJ's (a chain, though a decent one) opened in Davis, I am sure it would be a lot harder for places like McKinnon's, Farmer's Bounty, and Sessa's to keep paying their rent. And if all of those storefronts went empty, I don't want to imagine the 3 other burrito places that might open up!

You make a very good point. I do love McKinnon's. I can always get turkey tips there!

Ooh, that IS a fun exercise. My Perfect Square would have ONLY BURRITOS ... just kidding. I'd have to think some on the other businesses I'd want, but one thing I would certainly add would be a freaking bus to freaking Inman Sqaure.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2007-09-10 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
the 83 bus stops at Rindge Ave. and Mass. Ave., a short walk from Davis, and will take you to Inman Square.

Yes, I do love that bus, b/c it stops right in front of my work. However, it's about a mile walk from the closest stop to my house, which isn't impossible, but I wouldn't mind something in the Square.

Hey, like I said, this is a my-perfect-world scenario. In the mean time, I'll continue hiking to the 83 :).
