appliances?

Does anyone know of good places to get household appliances in this area? (Driving distance is fine.)

I'm specifically interested in looking into apartment-sized/mini versions of a few things, including countertop dishwashers and small freezers.

I know about Tags, Home Depot, and BestBuy.

Anyone have any other suggestions for places that might have this sort of thing?

(I know there are various online sources, and I may end up doing that if I do decide to buy, but I'd really like to see some of these things in person first.)

Sozio?

Their web site (http://www.sozio.com/) focuses on their Fifties furniture but Sozio, in Fresh Pond, Cambridge, does have a nice selection of apartment-sized appliances.

I'll second that - I have bought many appliances large and small at Sozio and have never been let down. They have always been straightforward and pleasant to deal with.

There's a Target in Everett...I think it's called the Gateway Shopping Plaza. There's a Best Buy, a new one, close to there too. Kill two birds with one stone if need be.

there's a closer Target just east of Union Square.

True. I never think of that one because I don't care for it as much as the one in Everett.

Target does not tend to have the best selection of appliances, if any at all. You're better off at Sears or a similar store. That being said, the Somerville Target is great--smaller than the Everett one, but still has everything you need and not as crowded.

Best Buy is horrible, and I refuse to give them my business after an awful experience at the Watertown store two years ago.

Hugo's in Melrose is awesome. bit of a drive but worth it.

Sears. I've been buying stuff from sears.com, but the Cambridgeside store is ok.

I was just walking around Inman Sq today and noticed a mom & pop appliance store right near Christina's ice cream. I don't know how good they are but it was nice to see this kind of store a I imagine the people might be pretty knowledgeable at a place like this.

counter top dishwasher?? whoa - I must be further behind the appliance curve than I thought. Do these work? Connect to the faucet or to dedicated taps? I have the taps in the kitchen but a washer is currently attached.

I got a countertop dishwasher from Office Max. Free delivery. It arrived the next day.

I'm not sure it's worthwhile for mini versions, but for full fledged appliances, the Sears outlet in Shrewsbury is totally worth the long trip. They have scratch and dent appliances at around half price. We bought our $1000 fridge for like $400 because it has a big fat scratch, on the side which is against the wall and no one ever sees. We also bought a washing machine and dishwasher there, all at substantial discount. It's a pain, but well worth the trip.

Lowes, Yale

I got my portable (wheels, not countertop) dishwasher from Lowes in Woburn, which isn't a bad drive. It was worth it for the "get our credit card, receive free delivery and six months no interest" deal.

I believe that Yale Lighting is, despite the name, also one of the larger appliance retailers in the area, although I know little about them. They're some manner of local chain, so you could probably find one along 128 with no problem.

There's also that enormous neon-lit appliance place in Fresh Pond, near where Concord Ave, New St, and Bay State Rd all meet (the "other" rotary), if that's not the Sozio mentioned above.... can't recall its name despite all the neon.

That sounds like Sozio.

Yale Lighting is a good place to look. They have a large range of appliances. I've also found a couple of their salesmen to be extremely helpful (although one time one person wasn't helpful at all). I'd go back there for any future appliance needs.

I will definitely second the Sears Outlet in Shrewsbury. I got a $1600 refrigerator for $650!! Great Deal! If you can't or won't make the ride, Yale Electric is a great place to look, as they have enormous amounts of appliances on display. They are right off the expressway in Dorchester. Then I'd try Wolcott in Arlington, Gray's in Melrose, Sozio, Lowe's, Home Depot, Best Buy, etc.
