powderhouse convenience store

on my daily trek to work i pass the abandoned corner store on college and broadway. as of yesterday the space was being gutted. i asked one of the workers this morning what was going in, he said a dunkin donuts and a convenience store. i guess they're subdividing the space?

i'm glad the storefront won't be empty, but... i don't know what this means for the broken yolk. (nice folks)

I'm going to be alone on this, but Yay dunkin donuts within easy walking distance of my house!

I was sad to see the old convenience store go, I used to stop there for soda most mornings on my way to the subway, but I wasn't surprised. I'm glad another will be taking its place.

no, i'm totally psyched about a dunkins on my path to work, too!

Boooo. Somerville doesn't need any more Dunkin Donuts. Why not rent to a competitor instead, like Honeydew or Marylou's or Peet's?

DD and Broken Yolk aren't even slightly similar establishments, so I don't see how it's any threat to the Yolk.

Presumably none of those businesses approached the realtors or the owners of the building wanting to rent the space.

I was thinking of this more in terms of the landlord actively seeking out tenants.

[identity profile] grapefruiteater.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who the landlord is for that space, but the convenience store that was in there before did not seem like the kind of tenant a landlord would actively seek out.

Given the state of the inside of that place every time I looked, I was in the habit of calling it the inconvenience store.

I don't think the landlord cares very much, and it sure took them a while to fill the space, so perhaps not so actively seeking tenants either.

Psh, I don't want to go all the way down to the Square or up Boston Ave for Dunkin's! I want to walk down the hill and get my donut on!

I kind of wish Krispy Kreme hadn't flopped here. I didn't like them generally, but periodically I get a craving for a donut with enough sugar to instantly melt my teeth.

Yeah but Honeydew and Marylou's are also donut places, and it would be nice to see a little competition here in Somerville.

What I want is a Waffle House, but there's no chance of that.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2009-01-28 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that different from a Waffle Haus? You can get Belgian waffles at Mr. Crepe during the winter.

[identity profile] arrowintwolakes.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's quite different. Waffle House (http://www.wafflehouse.com/) is a southern staple, more saturated in some areas than Dunkin Donuts or even Starbucks can imagine. There are six Waffle Houses within walking distance from my uncle's house in Brentwood, TN, and that's considered standard. It's diner food specializing in waffles and omlettes, and the waffles are amazing in the fast-food kind of way. Unfortunately, it's pretty strictly a southern thing; the nearest one (http://hosted.where2getit.com/wafflehouse/index.html?form=locator_search&search=Search+Maps&addressline=02143) is in PA.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2009-01-28 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh. Very confusing because the little huts that Mr. Crepe's owner runs at ski areas are called Waffle Haus. (Scroll down most of the way for photo.)

Hash browns, all the way, from Waffle House. OMG.

[identity profile] arrowintwolakes.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't forget the grits! O man! I always get the pecan waffle, bacon, and grits. Fortunately, I have my uncle in Nashville and my sister goes to UT, so I have many excuses to head to the south and get some Waffle House love.

or krispy kreme. Does those even exist in MA?

[personal profile] ron_newman 2009-01-28 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Used to. They failed here and closed all of their Massachusetts stores. The closest one was on Route 16 near Wellington station. There was another at the Prudential food court, and I forget where the other two or three were. All gone now.

Oh, I guess that figures. This city is already at donut saturation, basically.

I like krispy kreme because my favorite donuts are sugar covered, and although krispy kreme didn't usually have those, they would make them for me. I was shocked by that kind of flexibility at a chain store like that. I like the donuts better than those at dunkins too, although you can't eat as many before serious health risks arise.

Peet's would be rad, but honeydew, they are AWFUL, for real.

[identity profile] studeronomy.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I'm all for competition, but at some point survival of the fittest has to apply. Honeydew is disgusting. Peet's would be nice.

[identity profile] badseed1980.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, a good reason not to rent to Honeydew is that they SUCK by comparison to Dunkies. At least in my not-in-any-way-humble opinion. :)

[identity profile] lena-a-mermaid.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
There is a rule that each person in Massachusetts must live within 100 feet of at least 3 different Dunkin Donuts.

[identity profile] sparkgrrl658.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
yes. and in rhode island it drops to 50.

[identity profile] plumtreeblossom.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This won't hurt the Broken Yolk. At Dunks they don't have delicious pancakes and omletttes, and Dunks doesn't give you a free muffin while you and your partner wait for your breakfasts. Totally different level of service and dining.

Now I'm craving Broken Yolk. OM NOM NOM I have to go to work.

[identity profile] leko.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
My only concern would be the parking being taken up by people running into dunkins.
