on my daily trek to work i pass the abandoned corner store on college and broadway. as of yesterday the space was being gutted. i asked one of the workers this morning what was going in, he said a dunkin donuts and a convenience store. i guess they're subdividing the space?

i'm glad the storefront won't be empty, but... i don't know what this means for the broken yolk. (nice folks)

Psh, I don't want to go all the way down to the Square or up Boston Ave for Dunkin's! I want to walk down the hill and get my donut on!

I kind of wish Krispy Kreme hadn't flopped here. I didn't like them generally, but periodically I get a craving for a donut with enough sugar to instantly melt my teeth.

Yeah but Honeydew and Marylou's are also donut places, and it would be nice to see a little competition here in Somerville.

What I want is a Waffle House, but there's no chance of that.

Is that different from a Waffle Haus? You can get Belgian waffles at Mr. Crepe during the winter.

Yeah, it's quite different. Waffle House (http://www.wafflehouse.com/) is a southern staple, more saturated in some areas than Dunkin Donuts or even Starbucks can imagine. There are six Waffle Houses within walking distance from my uncle's house in Brentwood, TN, and that's considered standard. It's diner food specializing in waffles and omlettes, and the waffles are amazing in the fast-food kind of way. Unfortunately, it's pretty strictly a southern thing; the nearest one (http://hosted.where2getit.com/wafflehouse/index.html?form=locator_search&search=Search+Maps&addressline=02143) is in PA.

Ahh. Very confusing because the little huts that Mr. Crepe's owner runs at ski areas are called Waffle Haus. (Scroll down most of the way for photo.)

Hash browns, all the way, from Waffle House. OMG.

Don't forget the grits! O man! I always get the pecan waffle, bacon, and grits. Fortunately, I have my uncle in Nashville and my sister goes to UT, so I have many excuses to head to the south and get some Waffle House love.
