Bowl and Board space

I was walking by today and saw a construction permit (or perhaps application for a permit?) for a "lounge" in the window of the former Bowl and Board. Anyone know anything? I love my drinking and my Davis, but I wonder what our carrying capacity for bars is.

I happened to be at the liquor license hearing...
The guy who owns the Independent in Union is opening a mid-range restaurant there and hoping to re-open the old Jimmy Tingle theater eventually, tied to that. Kind of a Cambridge Common/Lizard Lounge thing I guess.

Yep, he wants a three-part space: restaurant, lounge, and theatre. I hope he gets all the necessary licenses.

I thought getting a new liquor license was virtually impossible. I know its big money to purchase an existing license, but they don't grant many new ones.

At least a year ago the landlords applied for and got some time of permit for the theater space. Perhaps it was just for beer and wine though? Their hope was to make the space more attractive to potential tenants. At the time they'd also been opposed to the idea of any food establishment going into the space/building. I guess times being tough for retail establishments is causing them to rethink that strategy.

The state granted the city of Somerville a bunch of new non-transferable licenses earlier this year. Also, he may have bought someone else's license, but he would still need the city's permission to use it here.

It's the former. He got a new, non-transferable, full liquor license.

I love this idea! I very much enjoy The Liz, and I'd be delighted if something similar came to Davis. I also hated seeing Jimmy Tingle's sitting empty and unused. I'm glad someone is trying to do something with it.

I miss Tingle's. We didn't make it there that often, but when we did, it was always a good time in a relaxed atmosphere.

oh, that could be cool.

What is the carrying capacity?

There's only one way to find out!

There's 12 pages of info (including photos) here:
http://www.somervillema.gov/cos_content/documents/StaffReportElmSt255.pdf

But, to summarize, the basement would become a lounge with 122 seats, the first floor a restaurant with 191 seats, and the theater in the basement would be renovated.

Also, here are the plans:
