No way!! I do love Carberry's as it is, but this is exciting.

so it sounds like it's going to be a mix of the two places, interesting. i've actually not been to Carberry's yet, are they closing for the takeover/revamping?

while i think Carberry's offerings are superior to Lyndell's, i am pretty excited about this promised "1880's flair" remodeling in Ball Sq!

Do you think they'll have the staff wear bustle dresses?

iiinteresting.

I hope they aren't expanding too quickly. Lyndell's opened a new location in the North End recently as well. I don't know how they're financing all of this, but the word "overleveraged" is creeping into my brain.

I'm actually really bummed to read there that the Ball Square location is going to be renovated to look like the "1880's." I really love the completely authentic 60's feel it has currently and dislike strongly any kind of faux-retro that replaces actual-retro. Plus, it's just the Lyndell's I grew up with so I like it the way it is!

The remodel seems pretty silly, since I go there to buy things, not really for the appearance of the store.

But having Carberry's breads and breakfasty goodies in walking distance from my house would be nice, so I hope they move some of the Carberry's recipes to Ball Square as well as some of the Lyndell's recipes to Central!

AGREED!!!!!

Since you asked...

As of June 30, 1887, the newly established Somerville Electric Light Company reported to the state that it was supplying power to 12 incandescent lamps and 20 arc lamps inside commercial establishments, plus 54 public arc lamps.

My guess is that Lyndell's would not have needed electric (or gas) lighting for the retail area since it would close before sunset every day.

I was in Carberry's this morning for a bran muffin, and was surprised to see a tray of unmistakable Lyndell's cupcakes and half-moons. I wondered what was going on there; now I know. I'd love to have Carberry's raisin bran muffin in Ball Square, and Lyndell's cupcakes everywhere...

Can anyone explain to me the difference between a Lyndell's half-moon and a New York deli black-and-white cookie?

[identity profile] sandrylene.livejournal.com 2010-03-07 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Lyndell's half moons have a lot more frosting on the top, and while frosting isn't *quite* the right word for the confection, it's a lost more kin to actual frosting than what's on a black-and-white cookie.

Black-and-whites always seem to me like they must have glazed or melted on the topping bit. The half-moons look like they've had the topping bit applied the way you'd frost a cupcake.

I don't know if that clarifies at all. The half-moons are kind of nice, but waaaaay too much sugar.

As long as they don't mess with the Hekla...

Maybe they can do something about the absurd internet prices, too.

I too like the untouched-since-the-1960s decor/vibe of Lyndell's!

If they get rid of the string wrapping machine, I am going to quit going there. Or I might try to buy the machine, and wrap everything I can find in string.
