SOMERVILLE DECLARES SNOW EMERGENCY EFFECTIVE SUNDAY, MARCH 1ST AT 2 P.M.

In accordance with the City’s Snow Emergency Procedures, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has declared a snow emergency for the City of Somerville to go into effect at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 1, 2009. During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted).  Cars not moved by 6 p.m. Sunday will be subject to ticketing and towing.  Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 1st, residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or school parking lot for the duration of the emergency.  A list of available City lots and other relevant information may be found on the City’s website at www.somervillema.gov

Residents who have not already done so may visit the City’s website, www.somervillema.gov, to view snow emergency procedures, download the snow procedures brochure or sign up for Connect CTY telephone and email alerts and other time sensitive messages from the City. Residents may also sign up for Connect CTY calls and email by calling 311.

In addition, flashing blue lights installed at 22 key intersections and entryways to the City will be activated immediately after the declaration of a snow emergency, and remain lit for the duration of the snow emergency.  As in years past, prerecorded information is also available on the city’s Information Hotline, 617-628-SNOW.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to current forecasts of heavy snow accumulation rates in the late evening hours of Sunday and early morning hours of Monday, March 2nd, city crews will need to clear illegally parked vehicles early, since towing operations cannot be conducted efficiently when snow falls in excess of 1.5 inches per hour.  Residents should be advised that vehicles still parked on the even side of the street after 6 p.m. on Sunday may be towed even little or no snow is falling at that time.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: Somerville Public Schools will be closed on Monday, March 2nd.

Tax preparation

Can anyone recommend a good tax preparer in the Somerville area whose rates are fairly reasonable? My husband and I just sat down to do our taxes and we think our various financial involvements have finally outgrown the capacity of our tiny brains. I know it's somewhat late in the game, but we'd love to have a pro do this to make sure it's done right.

Thanks!

curb alert - free shelves

1 set of bookshelves. About 4 feet high and 4 feet wide (very roughly). Medium brown. Unfinished, sturdy particle board. Can disassemble/reassemble without tools - flat pieces have slots that fit together.

They're on the curb outside 4 Chester St. (This is the other end of the street that Redbones is on.) They'll be out there until someone takes them or the Cambridge trash guys get them in the morning.

P.S. There's also a white microwave. It's 19 years old but works reasonably well.

Graffiti vs. "sign spam"

I read Somerville's graffiti policy and am wondering why they are not as concerned about "sign spam", which is uglier than some of the graffiti I've seen. See an image of sign spam here. The sign spam in Somerville typically is of the "CASH FAST FOR YOUR HOUSE" variety, with the occasional "Meet Singles Online."

The mayor ends the anti-graffiti article with "Thank you for joining us in making Somerville a more beautiful and safer place to live." I tried. Last summer I phoned 311 to report the seven locations where I saw these signs. Was passed around to various offices as they weren't sure who handles this problem. I asked for DPW, but the response there was also "I'm not sure."

Anyone else with gray squirrel problems in their attic?

We've been hearing squirrels running upstairs, behind the attic walls, but inside the house. The little bastards! There must be some hole somewhere. Perhaps the cold is making them want to find warm places, not sure. Is this common in Somerville? I see lots of squirrels around... Is there an easy solution to get rid of them? Should we call pest control or try to do something ourselves (dunno, traps, poison...)?
