In accordance with the City’s Snow Emergency Procedures, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has declared a snow emergency for the City of Somerville to go into effect at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 1, 2009. During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted).  Cars not moved by 6 p.m. Sunday will be subject to ticketing and towing.  Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 1st, residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or school parking lot for the duration of the emergency.  A list of available City lots and other relevant information may be found on the City’s website at www.somervillema.gov

Residents who have not already done so may visit the City’s website, www.somervillema.gov, to view snow emergency procedures, download the snow procedures brochure or sign up for Connect CTY telephone and email alerts and other time sensitive messages from the City. Residents may also sign up for Connect CTY calls and email by calling 311.

In addition, flashing blue lights installed at 22 key intersections and entryways to the City will be activated immediately after the declaration of a snow emergency, and remain lit for the duration of the snow emergency.  As in years past, prerecorded information is also available on the city’s Information Hotline, 617-628-SNOW.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to current forecasts of heavy snow accumulation rates in the late evening hours of Sunday and early morning hours of Monday, March 2nd, city crews will need to clear illegally parked vehicles early, since towing operations cannot be conducted efficiently when snow falls in excess of 1.5 inches per hour.  Residents should be advised that vehicles still parked on the even side of the street after 6 p.m. on Sunday may be towed even little or no snow is falling at that time.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: Somerville Public Schools will be closed on Monday, March 2nd.

I'd be willing to work from home, were that an option.

Right, just got Champion's robocall.

And let's not forget the techno remix (http://blog.cosmocatalano.com/post/73644223/probably-my-most-productive-three-hours-of-2009) of Tom Champion's January 27th snow emergency call!

This town has way too many artists in it ... :-)

I see an edit to this post, with the last line struck through. Does this mean schools will be open tomorrow?

That was my question as well.

I'm really confused about this storm because the forecasts I see are so different.
Weather.com predicts 5-8 inches today, and 6-10 tomorrow, but
accuweather predicts 2-4 today, and 1-3 tomorrow.

That's it; I'm moving back home. Until it is 95 and humid for 6 months, at which point I'll come screaming back :).

Thanks. You may want to edit the post to un-strikeout that last line.

Does anyone know if the libraries (I'm thinking specifically the west branch) close when there is a snow emergency? Or would it be best to call them tomorrow and see?

I would call them and check. During one snow storm this winter, I arrived at the west branch library and found it unexpectedly closed. There was a sign near the door that said they had a staffing shortage due to the weather, IIRC.

Now if anyone who works at the Somerville libraries reads this... would it be possible to post these notices on your website? I love the libraries (go almost every week for those awesome free books and DVDs), but getting advance warning of these closings would be a nice feature.

They're towing

I've been watching out my window on Banks Street as they tow cars parked on the even side. I haven't seen them do that for any other storm this winter. They're not fooling around this time.

There's a guy with a Subaru Impreza who's going to be wondering where his car went tomorrow morning.
